With the rerelease of Skyward Sword on the Switch, a new generation of Zelda fans, or people who missed out on the original Wii version, can experience the Ancient Cistern for the first time. While many water-themed dungeons in the series are notoriously difficult or annoying, Skyward Sword’s take on the theme is not only fresh but an excellent experience to boot. Found in Faron Woods on the surface, the Ancient Cistern's design is based on Buddhist imagery and stories, making it stand out among other temples in the franchise.
As with other dungeons in the series, the Ancient Cistern has a map tucked away in a chest. The dungeon map is one of the most integral parts of a traditional Zelda dungeon, alongside the new item each one introduces. When Link enters a dungeon for the first time, the only rooms he can see on the map are the ones he’s entered. However, upon collecting the dungeon map, it will reveal every single room and floor in that particular dungeon. Further, it will also mark unopened treasure chests, the boss room, and other points of interest useful for navigation. Here’s how players can get to the chest containing the Ancient Cistern’s dungeon map.
As players set foot in the Ancient Cistern, they’re greeted with a giant Buddha-like statue in the center of a circular room. This massive statue serves as the center of the room and entering it is necessary to not only progress the dungeon but obtain its map. However, it's locked at first, so players will need to find the key to continue. Head to the right side of the central room near the slimes, known as Chuchus in the Zelda series, and enter the open door there. Traverse the following two rooms, featuring Skulltulas and some simple lily-pad puzzles, to reach the chest containing the small key.
With the key in Link’s pocket, head to the central room once again to open the door. While it may seem like a relatively empty room, there is a hole that players can jump down into. Doing so will prompt a mini-boss fight with the 4-handed Stalmaster, who wields 4 weapons at once in battle! After their defeat, a doorway will open up leading to the dungeon’s item: the whip! With this in hand, players can progress straight to the map.
Return to the central room and head right in the same direction as the first room where the Chuchus patrol. Climb up the steps next to the stairs and use the newly obtained whip to swing across the grapple points. On the other side, there’s a treasure chest behind a few patches of grass. Open it to obtain the dungeon map, and continue onwards through the Ancient Cistern!
