WitcherCon Announced For July With Witcher TV & Game Reveals Planned

Netflix and video game developer/publisher CD Projekt Red reveal they will be co-hosting a special event entitled WitcherCon in July for The Witcher franchise. Based on the novel series of the same name from Andrzej Sapkowski, the story centers on the titular legend, Geralt of Rivia, as he makes his way across the medieval world of the Continent hunting down beasts and monsters and occasionally being wrapped up in larger, fate-driven quests. The source material is comprised of six novels and 15 short stories.

After an initial film and TV adaptation in Poland in the early 2000s, the franchise found its way to the states thanks to CD Projekt Red's video game adaptation in 2007. Receiving rave reviews, it spawned a trilogy alongside three spin-off games, the former of which saw similar acclaim and were financial hits, selling over 50 million copies worldwide. With this major interest from fans, Netflix began working on its own adaptation, initially conceived as a film before transitioning to television with Henry Cavill slated to star as Geralt.

A little over two months after production wrapped on season 2 of the Netflix series, the streaming platform and CD Projekt Red initially took to Twitter to tease a major announcement coming next month. Beginning with the game's official account tweeting at the Netflix account, the two discussed getting together in July for something big, until Netflix Geeked made the WitcherCon announcement. Check out the series of posts below:

Those who fell in love with the first season of The Witcher have been anxiously awaiting its return for season 2, which was hampered by numerous production delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and Cavill getting injured on set. But with production finally having wrapped in April and showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich confirming that post-production is nearing completion in May, this event is sure to hold plenty of exciting things for viewers. With plans of interactive panels, breaking news, never-before-seen reveals, and looks at new merchandise coming up from the franchise, a crowd will surely be drawn to it.

Plus, it has been just over six years since The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt hit shelves and five since the last expansion pack Blood and Wine debuted. CD Projekt Red has confirmed plans to bring the game to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S later this year, making it likely the event will confirm the release date for the new versions with an expansion pack bringing Henry Cavill's iteration of The Witcher to the game world. With just a month left until the event arrives, it's time to get ready to toss some coins.
