The Book of Boba Fett explores the bounty hunter’s unseen Star Wars original trilogy past, says star Temuera Morrison. The character that would come to be known as Boba Fett famously first appeared in animated form in the misbegotten Star Wars Holiday Special. But Boba Fett would not truly enter Star Wars lore until his appearance in The Empire Strikes Back where he struck a menacing figure while stalking Han Solo and ultimately taking possession of the carbonite-encased smuggler on behalf of Jabba the Hutt.
Boba Fett would of course return in the original trilogy wrap up film Return of the Jedi, though things would take a bad turn for him as he wound up apparently being consumed by the sarlacc after a slapstick scene involving a blind Han Solo and a vibro-ax. It wasn’t until last year’s The Mandalorian season 2 that Boba Fett’s ultimate fate was confirmed: he somehow escaped the sarlacc and later spent a long time wandering the wastes of Tatooine, looking for his lost helmet, during which time he gained a new ally in Fennec Shand. Boba Fett did of course ultimately get his helmet back from Din Djarin, while also helping the Mandalorian rescue Baby Yoda.
Boba Fett will indeed now follow in the footsteps of Din Djarin by getting his own streaming series on Disney+. Specific details about the show are predictably hard to come by, but Boba Fett actor Morrison did drop a little information during a talk with Rotten Tomatoes. In the interview, Morrison spoke about the time period covered on The Book of Boba Fett and confirmed it takes place at least in part during the span of the original trilogy. He said:
Well, we can’t say too much, but we’re going to see his past and where he’s been since The Empire Strikes Back. Somebody pointed out he’s been kind of stuck in this one place, and now’s the time to actually go back in time and check out his journey and find out more about him.
Obviously Boba Fett’s past already has been somewhat explored in various Star Wars projects. A very young Boba Fett was briefly seen in the Star Wars prequels where it was revealed that he’s actually a clone. The animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars then showed how Boba Fett became a bounty hunter. During the original trilogy, Boba Fett was not only a working bounty hunter but also became entangled with other events going on around the Galactic Civil War. Morrison's remark about the show covering where he's been "since Empire Strikes Back" if taken literally means dealing with his journey to Jabba the Hutt's palace with frozen Han Solo, and whatever else he was up to during the brief span of time between Empire and Jedi. Of course it's assumed the show will depict his escape from the sarlacc, answering that burning question once and for all. But there's clearly a lot of Boba Fett story left unseen from throughout the years covered in the original trilogy, opening up a lot of possibilities.
The title The Book of Boba Fett indeed implies that this will be a relatively loose narrative that is allowed to freely move back and forth in time. Events set after The Mandalorian are fair game, as are events that took place during the original trilogy. It's already been reported of course that there will be strong connections between The Book of Boba Fett and Mandalorian, and characters from Mandalorian like Fennec Shand are known to be on the new show. Overall, it seems Boba Fett fans can look forward to a wide range of stories spanning a big swath of Star Wars history.
