Netflix has released new images from Locke & Key season 2, which will premiere in October. Netflix's well-received adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's comic book of the same name, Locke & Key premiered to widespread popularity in February 2020. The show chronicles the tale of three siblings, Bode, Tyler, and Kinsey, who, after the mysterious murder of their father, move back to their ancestral residence in Matheson, Massachusetts. At their family home, the siblings come across a number of magical keys, which they used to unlock various doors leading to bizarre quests. While the ethereal adventures help the siblings figure out the secret behind their father's death, they also provoke the attention of a demonic spirit residing in the Locke family home. The demon soon starts pursuing the siblings to steal their keys, intending to use them for its own wicked purposes.
After its premiere, Locke and Key was renewed for a second season almost immediately. But while the show sought to start filming around the same time, production was delayed due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the US. Subsequently, the show began shooting only in late September 2020, and filming wrapped up in April 2021. Although a few months have passed since the show finished production, there hasn't been substantial information in terms of teasers and trailers. That's presumably because the show needs time to finish post-production, which is an intensive process due to Locke & Key's top-notch VFX. But now it appears that work on season 2 is fully complete, as Netflix has offered an update about the show.
On Tuesday, Netflix unveiled a bunch of first-look images from Locke & Key season 2. The streamer also confirmed the show's October release, although a particular premiere date wasn't specified. The new photos are simply stills from the upcoming season which offer glimpses at the various characters, including the Locke siblings. Dodge, whose full evil plan was left a mystery at the end of season 1, is notably missing from the images. But that doesn't mean she won't be back, as actress Laysla De Oliveira - who plays the character - has confirmed Dodge's return.
Already renewed through season 3, a lot would have changed once Locke & Key returns in October. For one, Aaron Ashmore's Duncan and Hallea Jones' Eden are no longer recurring characters, as they have been promoted to series regulars for season 2. Additionally, there will also be some new cast members. This includes Brendan Hines (The Tick), who plays Matheson Academy's magnetic history teacher Josh Bennett. Josh harbors a secret motive, and in order to have his goals fulfilled, he will approach the Locke siblings in a way they can't control. This is visible in one of the first-look photos from season 2, where Josh can be seen having coffee with the siblings' mother, Nina.
With the first-look images, it's clear that season 2 is looking to dig deeper into the Locke & Key comics lore. The first season was overwhelmingly praised for its handling of loss and trauma, and those themes would continue to resonate throughout season 2 as the Locke family ties will be tested, possibly due to Josh's influence on the family matriarch. The mystical adventures are also intact, as is visible from an image of Kinsey walking on water with a quirky swan boat behind her. That said, more information about Locke & Key's upcoming season will hopefully be revealed in the coming days, so fans should be on the lookout.
