The city council in Walsall, West Midlands County, England is being criticized for purchasing large plant pots that resemble Warp Pipes from the Super Mario Bros. franchise. Nintendo's Mario franchise began all the way back in 1981, with the now-iconic Italian plumber serving as the protagonist of the classic platform arcade game Donkey Kong. Over nearly 40 years the series has grown into one of the most recognizable and popular franchises in the entire gaming industry.
Alongside the side-scrolling and 3D platformers that fans adore, the Super Mario franchise has grown to encompass a wide range of genres. Mario Golf: Super Rush is an upcoming golf game set to star the vigorous plumber and his large cast of supporting characters. The title, revealed on February 17 and set to release on June 25, will follow traditional golf rules and feature unique mechanics such as a gauge to show the ball's trajectory and a scanner to assess the course's terrain. Mario Golf: Super Rush will feature 16 playable characters, including Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser, and each will have their own strengths and weaknesses. Mario Party, which began in 1998, is another popular Mario series which allows a group of players to compete in a variety of mini games while controlling iconic Mario characters.
News resource Birmingham Live recently reported that the council in Walsall has been criticized for spending taxpayer money on huge plant pots that resemble Super Mario Bros. Warp Pipes. Fifteen of the enormous green pots sit in the town center of Walsall, a large town in West Midlands County, England. Eurogamer reports that the particularly vehement criticism from Walsall's residents is due to the fact that the town has been asked to cut £29 million, or close to $41 million, from its budget. The big Warp Pipe lookalikes have been described by the town's populace as "garish monstrosities" and "eyesores."
While the population of Walsall may not be thrilled to see Super Mario Bros. come to life in their town, many gamers are eager to see the acrobatic plumber come to the big screen instead. Nintendo has partnered with Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment to create an animated Super Mario film, which is expected to release in 2022. Nintendo's global president, Shuntaro Furukawa, has also stated that animated adaptations of other Nintendo franchises such as The Legend of Zelda and Metroid are possible for the future.
Walsall's huge green potted plants will look amusing to many gamers, since they really do resemble Super Mario's iconic Warp Pipes. However, the citizens of the English town are far from amused by the unappealing decor, especially due to the misuse of their already tight budget. Just as Mario would use these pipes to travel between levels, the people of Walsall appear eager to travel to a different town.
