Chad Michael Murray To Play Ted Bundy In New Thriller American Boogeyman

Chad Michael Murray plays Ted Bundy in Voltage Pictures' upcoming thriller movie American Boogeyman. Breaking through the pop culture stratosphere with One Tree Hill, Murray quickly found a seat in the class of 2000s teen heartthrobs. He later lent his talents to darker characters, most recently returning to The CW to channel creepy cult leader Edgar Evernever on Riverdale. The movie boasts an untold perspective on the notorious tale, focusing on the fearless detective and rookie FBI profiler who led the manhunt for Bundy in the 1970s.

Screen Daily reports that the actor plays serial killer Ted Bundy in the upcoming film American BoogeymanAmerican Boogeyman already has a release date through Fathom Events, set to premiere in U.S. theaters on August 16. Meanwhile, Voltage and Dark Star Pictures will handle downstream rights, with a projected September debut. Voltage Pictures president and COO Jonathan Deckter expounded on the casting choice with a statement:

“Murray is so talented and expertly captures Bundy’s charm and seductive nature, traits that the notorious killer exploited to win the trust of his victims as well as society. It’s fantastic to continue working with the very gifted Lucas and Dan on this feature and bring engaging narratives to the screen.”

The Dan he refers to is Daniel Farrands (The Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson), who sits at the helm of the project as writer and director. Voltage Pictures secured the global rights to his thriller, which is currently in post-production. Murray leads the cast, which also notably includes Lin Shaye (the Insidious franchise) and Holland Roden (MTV’s Teen Wolf).

Murray is hardly the first known name to lend their charms to Bundy. NCIS star Mark Harmon was one of the first famous actors to step into the killer's shoes for a 1986 TV miniseries. The Stranger Beside Me tapped Billy Campbell to play the evil role in 2000. Most recently, Zac Efron earned massive attention for playing Bundy in Netflix’s 2019 Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. Based on past castings, one thing's clear; pairing a star name with Bundy's is a sure way for American Boogeyman to get attention.
