Manifest: Why Zeke's Powers Are Different From The Passengers'

In Manifest season 3, Zeke (Matt Long) has developed a unique ability that’s not shared by the passengers. The Flight 828 passengers – along with other characters who have returned after mysteriously disappearing – all receive Callings, which are strange visions and messages that help them figure out what to do next. This is what connects them all together.

It was suggested that Zeke might be acquiring a power that’s not part of the Callings in Manifest season 3’s second episode. Saanvi (Parveen Khaur) thought it was odd when Zeke correctly described her emotional state. In the following episode, it was confirmed that Zeke did indeed obtain a new power. Exactly what it is hasn’t been clearly explained, but it would seem that it’s empathic in nature. When Beverly (Adriane Lenox) was upset, Zeke sensed what she was feeling and was able to connect with her emotionally. It’s not clear how, but Zeke knew exactly what to say and how to calm her down. In the latest episode, he used this ability to reach Beverly again and to gain Pete’s cooperation.

At this point in the series, Zeke is the only character to have his own ability. As for why that could be, the explanation is likely related to the Death Date. In the Manifest season 2 finale, Zeke became the first (and only) character to survive it. After that, Zeke suddenly stopped getting the Callings. It could be that getting a new power is part of some sort of process that the passengers have yet to learn about. It appears that once people can find a way to live beyond the Death Date, they lose the Callings and enter into an all-new phase. Since no one aside from him has gotten that far yet, it’s hard to say if Zeke’s powers will continue to grow, or if he’ll experience other unexpected changes as time passes.

It’s worth wondering what Zeke’s new empathic abilities mean for the other characters. The Flight 828 passengers won’t have to face their Manifest Death Dates until 2024, so it’ll be a while before any of them will have to deal with this. Even so, viewers may not have to wait that long to find out if Zeke is a unique case. It’s been stated that because Pete (Devin Harjes), Kory (DazMann Still), and Jace (James McMenamin) were only dead for a week, their Death Dates are coming up in just a few days. Right now, the main characters are trying to help Pete save himself, so if they’re successful, he could potentially pick up the same power that Zeke has. Alternatively, there’s a chance that he could develop an entirely different ability.

If not, Zeke may remain the only Manifest character who has access to it for the time being. As he works to understand its purpose, he can continue to use it to assist Michaela (Melissa Roxburgh) in pursuing and deciphering the Callings. So far, he’s mostly used it to help people, so it’s likely that he’ll keep utilizing it in a similar way going forward. It may even make reasoning with others and getting them on their side easier in the future. Either way, it's a new twist that has big repercussions for the show moving forward.
