Kung Fu is hinting at a new mystery regarding Henry’s presence on the show and the help that he’s been providing to the main character. It’s possible that Henry Yan (Eddie Liu) does have some secret motive for aiding Nicky (Olivia Liang) in her investigation into the eight magical weapons.
Through her brother, Nicky became acquainted with Henry in the Kung Fu series premiere. The character, who appears to be serving as a love interest to Nicky, is an experienced martial artist and an expert on ancient Chinese history. Since meeting her, his knowledge about Chinese myths has helped Nicky a great deal when it comes to understanding what’s going on with Zhilan (Yvonne Chapman), the truth about the sword she stole from the Shaolin Temple, and what she’s really after. So far, most of the answers she’s been able to obtain have come from him and his extensive research.
In Kung Fu season 1, episode 3, “Patience”, it was suggested that Henry may be more than he seems. When the two had to get inside Professor Chau’s office, Nicky was intrigued to see that Henry’s ability to skillfully pick a lock. At the end of the episode, Evan (Gavin Stenhouse) saw footage of this and asked someone to do some digging into Henry. The tease seemed to be a hint that some shady secrets about Henry could be uncovered in the near future. It could be that whatever Evan finds out about Henry’s past will be connected to his reasons for helping her. Based on what he’s said on the show, his role is related to his love for history. Plus, it could be that he’s romantically interested in Nicky.
Another possibility is that Henry has something to do with the eight magical weapons Zhilan is looking for. It’s already been established that each of the weapons are supposed to be protected by members of a specific bloodline. Apparently, the Sword of Liang Diayu from Kung Fu’s pilot episode belonged to the Zhang family, who are the ancestors of Zhilan and Pei-Ling (Vanessa Kai). It could be that like Zhilan, Henry is a descendant of one of the eight “guardian families.” If that’s the case, that would provide an explanation for why he’s so interested in Zhilan and the weapons. If they’re part of his heritage, it would make sense for him to want to piece together this puzzle and find all of the weapons. Plus, if he has some understanding of their power, he could just want to stop a villain like Zhilan from getting her hands on them.
Either way, his character having a hidden interest in the weapons would mean that Henry has just been pretending that he's slowing figuring out all these details. It may be revealed that he’s been purposely guiding Nicky in the right direction so that she can help him in the future. While The CW's Kung Fu reboot going in this direction would surely create some conflict with Nicky and Henry at first, at the same time it would add an interesting level of depth to his character and provide him with a backstory that connects to the show’s main plot.
