Robert Kirkman, the creator of the new series, Invincible, says the show could run for seven seasons. Invincible is a raunchy, American animated superhero drama meant for adults that streams on Amazon Prime Video. The show is based on the Invincible comic book series that debuted in 2003, which Kirkman also created. The story follows Mark Grayson, a.k.a. Invincible, as a teenager. His father, Nolan Grayson, a.k.a. Omni-Man, is the most powerful superhero on Earth. Once Mark begins to develop his own powers, he starts to follow in his father's footsteps. The show premieres on March 26, 2021, and stars a massive cast including Steven Yeun (Invincible), Mark Hamill (Rosebaum), Seth Rogen (Allen the Alien), and J. K. Simmons (Omni-Man). The series has been met with positive reviews and currently has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Something that has made the Invincible comics so popular is the fact that many of the battle scenes are often depicted in a very gory and NSFW way. In the true spirit of the comics, the first episode of the Amazon series ends with a bloody twist. Omni-Man murders the superhero team, Guardians of the Globe, in an extremely violent manner. This is something that happened in the comics but not until later in the story.
Kirkman cannot wait to tell more crazy stories from the comics like this. In fact, he expects to be telling Invincible stories for a very long time. In an interview with The Wrap, Kirman had this to say about his long time plans for the show:
The storyline in the comics was told over the course of 16 years and 144 issues,” he said. “I don’t have an exact number of how many seasons we would like to get but, you know, a lot would be my desire. I think that a nice seven-season show would give us enough room to tell that full story. But I also think that it might be better if we did it in five or six, I don’t really know. That’s something that we’ll be able to figure out along the way, as we get into it. But the idea is to tell very many stories.
Given how many issues there are of the comics, it is safe to say that Kirkman and his team should not run out of stories anytime soon. In fact, this is not the only thing he is developing based on the Invincible comic book series. In 2017, Point Grey Pictures and Skybound Entertainment announced that they would be producing a separate movie based on the comic books with Kirkman. Invincible stars, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, are set to write and direct the film with Universal Pictures distributing the movie. In January of this year, Kirkman confirmed his involvement in the film and that Rogen and Goldberg are still involved with the project.
It looks like Kirkman will be telling the Invincible story for several years to come. This will take the form of both a TV show and a movie. With 16 years of comic book history, Kirkman will likely never run of stories to tell.
