Warning: contains mild spoilers for King in Black: Black Knight #1!
In a new preview from Marvel Comics, the first few pages of King in Black: Black Knight #1 have been released, seeing the Black Knight engaging in battle with one of Knull the Symbiote God's symbiote dragons. While one would think that taking on a dragon would be easy work for a knight, this doesn't appear to be the case for Dane Whitman. Not only does he have to contend with the dark influences of his Ebony Blade, but the beast before him is by no means an average dragon. It is from space and made up of the primordial void made flesh, after all.
Dane Whitman is the Black Knight of the current era, continuing the legacy of the mantle that has existed since the days of medieval England. The first Black Knight (Sir Percy of Scandia) served under the rule of King Arthur, so Dane naturally has some big shoes to fill. Based out of Castle Garrett, the Black Knight has been an Avenger in the past, and he's also the wielder of the Ebony Blade. This legendary and powerful sword in particular may very well hold the key to defeating Knull and his forces, as it was carved out of a meteor and enchanted by the wizard Merlin before it was given to Sir Percy, to be handed down from Black Knight to Black Knight.
However, the Ebony Blade also influences the one wielding it with dark impulses, urging them to senselessly kill and sow all kinds of violence and bloodshed. As such, the Black Knight constantly has to resist these urges. Unfortunately, it looks as though the power of blade will drive Whitman to challenge a symbiote dragon without any real kind of plan, much to the disappointment of Sir Percy's spirit. Here's the preview pages for King in Black: Black Knight #1 from Simon Spurrier and Jesus Saiz with cover art from Dan Mora, as well as the synopsis from Marvel Comics:
KNULL's ferocious assault upon earth has begun and Dane Whitman - Avenger, hero, and wielder of the mighty Ebony Blade as the BLACK KNIGHT - takes up sword and shield to defend against the unstoppable onslaught. Though the blade grants Dane incredible power so too does it consume him with a lust for violence and destruction. As the endless horde of symbiote dragons darken the skies of Shanghai, will the Black Knight overcome the growing evil within himself and join AERO and SWORD MASTER in saving the city?! And what secrets will the battle against Knull reveal about Dane's past?
Soon to be played by Kit Harington in the MCU's The Eternals, the Black Knight is getting some love in Marvel Comics after a few false starts. Always something of a misfit, given that the character began life in medieval rather than superhero fiction, it seems like Spurrier is leaning into Dane's (many) failings, delivering a relatable Black Knight who merges fantasy (ghostly advisors!) with sci-fi (cloned winged horses!)
It looks as though the Black Knight still has a ways to go before he truly masters the impulses of the Ebony Blade. However, his rash actions do provide a pretty hilarious and entertaining failure all the same. In any case, Whitman will be able to coalesce and regain his composure, allowing himself the opportunity to come up with a more thought-out plan to face Knull's legions and perhaps take a pivotal role in his defeat. After all, the Ebony Blade seems to be one of the few hopes the world has left as King in Black continues from Marvel Comics.
