Superstore Cancelled, Ending After Season 6 | Screen Rant

Time to board up the Cloud 9: NBC's Superstore has officially been cancelled and will end after its current sixth season. Superstore first premiered in 2015 as part of NBC's comedy block. The series follows the employees of Cloud 9, a big box store in the vein of Walmart or Target, as they suffered through the everyday realities and horrors of working in retail. Though never a massive hit, Superstore was always a reliable performer and earned positive reviews for its handling of topics like unions, undocumented immigrants, and middle class workers.

Going into season 6, Superstore found itself facing several game-changing obstacles. First, leading lady America Ferrera announced in February she would be departing the series at the end of the first season; however, when the coronavirus pandemic delayed the final episodes, Ferrera's exit was moved to the start of season 6. Never one to avoid current events, Superstore became one of the many shows to incorporate COVID-19 into its plot, with the Cloud 9 employees adjusting to their new safety protocols to typical hilarious effect.

Unfortunately, Superstore likely won't see the end of the pandemic. NBC announced today that Superstore will come to an end after season 6 (via The Wrap). There are still 11 episodes left to go, and they will begin airing on Thursday, January 14. The finale itself is expected to air this spring. Executive producers Justin Spitzer, Gabe Miller and Jonathan Green said in a statement:

“We’re grateful to Universal Television and NBC for letting us make 113 episodes of a show we’re so proud of, and for giving us the chance to work with such an incredibly talented group of actors, writers and crew. We’re thankful most of all to the viewers who’ve stuck with us for the past six years (or discovered us somewhere along the way). We’ll do our best to go out strong and give you the satisfying ending you deserve.”

The early announcement means Superstore's writers will get the chance to end the show properly, which is more than what some other recently cancelled shows can say. It remains to be seen if Ferrera will return for the final episodes, as she recently said she would love to appear again before Superstore ends. This is likely a bit sooner than she and others were expecting, but perhaps she'll find a way to make a quick appearance before Superstore shutters its doors for good.

This news comes as a blow to those who love Superstore, particularly since it built a reputation of being an excellent underrated comedy. While not as much of an awards darling as The Good Place or as meme-able as Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Superstore always provided consistent laughs and biting social commentary. The eccentric employees of Cloud 9 made for a memorable ensemble, and those who have had the distinct pleasure of working in retail definitely empathized with their struggles. Superstore will certainly be missed, but hopefully it'll go out with a well-deserved bang.
