Pokemon GO is hosting a special event featuring a shiny Celebi to celebrate the upcoming film, Pokemon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle. Game Freak is doing a lot to market its new film, including releasing a new Mythical Pokemon, Zarude. Unfortunately, acquiring the new beast in Pokemon Sword and Shield is impossible unless fans preorder tickets to the film's Japanese release. This has frustrated and disappointed a lot of international players.
Pokemon GO, meanwhile, has been seeing a lot of added content over the months, and not all of it is related to the upcoming movie. Recently Niantic unveiled its plans for the next Community Day event, which will boost the likelihood of encountering Pokemon which previously appeared in community days throughout 2019 and 2020. This has led to such an extensive list that the December Community Day will actually be taking place over two days, spanning from the 12th to the 13th. It's sure to be a major event for Pokemon GO fans and a great way for them to fill out their ever-growing rosters.
But this Community Day event isn't the only special celebration fans can look forward to participating in this month. Pokemon GO Live (via Game Rant) has announced a collaboration with Pokemon the Movie to take place in Pokemon GO starting on December 14th. By completing a Special Research quest line starting on that date, players will get a chance to catch an elusive and valuable Shiny Celebi. In a surprising story twist, players will be guided through this chain of tasks not be the ever-present Professor Willow, but by classic Team Rocket bandits Jesse and James. These lovable thieves will be appearing throughout Pokemon GO with new shadow Pokemon to unleash. Finally, in addition to encountering an increased population of Pokemon who feature in the movie, players will also be able to encounter the rare and adorably costumed Explorer Pikachu. The event will run from December 14th to December 21st.
Unlike the controversial tie in with Pokemon Sword and Shield, players don't need Japanese movie tickets to enjoy the event. This is the latest in a long and proud tradition of special events in Pokemon GO, which hasn't really been hindered by the COVID-19 lockdown. The game, which is largely based around active exploration, has had a remarkably good response to having its fans trapped at home due to lockdowns. It's offered a series of bonuses to make sure player progression isn't hindered, and is even extending these bonuses through June of next year as mandates are reinstated.
Pokemon GO is a legendary title. When it launched in 2016 it changed the social landscape for several months, and that utopian launch period remains a gold standard for mobile game popularity by which other phone games like Among Us may be judged. It may not be quite as monumental as it was back then, but Pokemon GO remains a beloved and oft-played title, and come December 14th, there are sure to be a lot of fans taking to their phones to get their hands on a Shiny Celebi.
