John Constantine Takes His Ultimate Form To Save DC's World

Warning! Spoilers ahead for DCeased: Dead Planet #6

As far as heroes go, John Constantine isn’t exactly the most … well, heroic. He's selfish, arrogant, and isn’t afraid to fight dirty, but for better or worse, Constantine just became humanity’s best shot at saving the world.

In DCeased: Dead Planet #6, the survivors finally get some good news - unfortunately, it’s followed by even more bad news. The heroes manage to unlock the cure for the Anti-Life virus within Cyborg and successfully test it on Big Barda, meaning they will be able to save the rest of the Anti-Living once they manufacture enough of the cure. However, at the same time, Ivo and Penguin’s Amazo army is deployed to wipe out the undead, and not long after, Trigon arrives to lay waste to the Earth. With two massive threats closing in, the heroes are running out of time to save humanity, so Constantine makes his move.

After acquiring the Spear of Destiny, Cloak of Souls, and Staff of Shazam in the last issue, Constantine only needs the helmet and amulet of Doctor Fate to complete his magical arsenal. Doctor Fate isn’t exactly willing to give up his gear, but that didn’t prevent Constantine from getting the rest of his weaponry, and the stakes are too high to stop now. With a little help from Phantom Stranger (help = stabbing Fate with the Spear of Destiny), Constantine takes the helmet and amulet and assumes his ultimate form. Equipped with the powers of both Doctor Fate and Shazam, not to mention his own magic abilities and some of the most powerful artifacts in the DC universe, Constantine flies off to presumably meet Trigon head-on. “Ready or not, world,” he says, “I’m coming to @$#%#@ save you.”

As awesome as this moment is, it’s saddened by the fact that, in all likelihood, Constantine is flying to his doom. John has seen the future in Madam Xanadu’s crystal ball, but avoids sharing the details with his love interest, Zatanna, who says “John knew I’d stop him if he told me the truth.” All this time, Constantine has been operating with a “the end justifies the means” mindset - all the underhanded methods he used to get the magical artifacts were necessary so he could give his life to stop Trigon, thereby saving the world and paying for his sins in one fell swoop. Regardless, with all those abilities combined, Constantine is stronger than he has ever been before; now he just needs to put his massive power boost to good use.

While signs point to Constantine’s demise, there’s always a chance he’ll survive the coming conflict. After all, if anyone could cheat death, it’s John Constantine.
