Harvey Dent Would Have Told the Truth in The Dark Knight, Says Aaron Eckhart

Aaron Eckart believes Harvey Dent would have told the truth at the end of The Dark Knight. Dent's transformation in Two-Face happens late in the film after Rachel Dawes' tragic death. Once the shining beacon of good in a corrupt Gotham, the villain goes on a killing spree to avenge her death. This includes murdering the cops that were on Joker's payroll and who helped take Rachel to the place of her death.

Batman and police commissioner James Gordon stop Dent's murderous rampage as he attempts to kill Gordon's family. Batman ends up killing Dent, pushing him to his death after Dent shoots him. The movie ends with Batman convincing the police commissioner to pin Dent's murders on the caped crusader to retain Dent's heroic image in the eyes of the people of Gotham. This would preserve the fragile state of the city after Joker's twisted games earlier in the film.

In a new interview with THREckhart discusses the character's choice to pin the murders on Batman. Despite their good intentions, Eckhart thinks that Dent would have fought against their decision. He cites Dent's inherent honesty as one of the reasons. He believes that, despite Dent's transformation into Two-Face, the character's moral center remains. As district attorney, the Dent always fought for the truth, and Eckhart believes that would have been no different if he had survived the skirmish with Batman.

He would’ve told the truth. That’s the great thing about Harvey Dent. Despite whatever is going on, he’s a truth-teller and he’s a moral center. Harvey Dent was out there fighting for every man and woman, for truth and justice, and he put himself on the line. But having done so, he got bit, and he was forever changed. But you don’t want to lose your Harvey Dents in life. No matter how much money or pressure there is, no matter how much coercion, control or corruption there is, Harvey Dent is going to stay true to the moral center and the truth. People can rely on that, and you don’t see that today.

If Dent had survived at the end of The Dark Knight, the trilogy's entire trajectory would have changed. The Dark Knight Rises opens with Batman having disappeared for eight years and Bruce Wayne becoming a recluse. The decision to lie at the end of The Dark Knight sets the film up for Batman's redemption arc, a crucial part of the final film in Christopher Nolan's trilogy. Without Batman's redemption and the appearance of Bane and Talia al Ghul, the film could've lost the full-circle moment that recalls the beginnings of the trilogy.

However, it is worth noting that The Dark Knight Rises was originally going to look a lot different. Joker was initially slated to return before Heath Ledger's tragic death, which could have potentially pushed aside villains like Bane and Talia al Ghul in favor of another showdown between Batman and the Clown Prince of Crime. The lie most likely would have remained intact, but its ramifications could have been quite different. If Joker remained in the picture while Batman disappeared, we could have seen a similar takeover of Gotham, but one where Joker and his henchman took over rather than Bane. Despite Eckhart's feelings about Dent's good intentions, it seems as if the lie at the end of The Dark Knight was necessary to continue to the trilogy.
