It appears CD Projekt RED's Cyberpunk 2077 will launch with a day one patch that weighs in at a whopping 43GB. Given the game's most recent 21-day delay, on top of news that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions were the primary cause, such a hefty patch is hardly surprising. Still, it's bound to prove rather troublesome, especially when considering the base game's reported install size of over 71GB.
In late October, CD Projekt RED pushed the RPG out of its November release date, penciling it in for a December launch. Thanks to details shared in an investor call with company president and joint CEO Adam KiciÅski, the reason behind the third delay became readily apparent. While Cyberpunk 2077 ran well on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, the PS4 and Xbox One versions were in need of further optimization.
Now that review copies are being sent to press and various content creators, more granular details are beginning to emerge. Earlier today, YouTuber DreamcastGuy posted an image on Twitter of the game being installed on a console. According to the image, Cyberpunk 2077 has a 43.5GB day one patch. Based on another tweet from DreamcastGuy, this information more than likely concerns the Xbox One version. However, it's possible the day one update on the PS4 version will similarly demand a considerable amount of space, as well.
Perhaps the extra work on the title's PS4 and Xbox One SKUs can explain the massive day one patch? Such a notion does not seem beyond the realm of possibility. Now the question is whether the base game and day one update will require the same amount of space on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, given each console's impressive SSD technology.
Naturally, the overall size of Cyberpunk 2077 will continue climb for many months after release. Of course, this will be due in large part to post-launch updates. But CD Projekt RED's ambitious DLC plans are sure to also add some heft to the game's size. Depending on how the studio chooses to roll out its multiplayer content, it, too, could very well increase Cyberpunk 2077's already incredible demand for extra space. Players can tuck those thoughts away for the time being, though, since news about the DLC won't go live until after launch. Similarly, multiplayer-related details are being saved for early 2021.
Cyberpunk 2077 will be released on Thursday, December 10 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
