Haunting of Bly Manor Tops Nielsen Streaming Ratings

The Haunting of Bly Manor took the top spot in its second week on Neilsen's streaming ratings, in a top 10 made up entirely of Netflix content. Nielsen's streaming ratings, introduced in September this year as a counterpart to its more traditional network viewership ratings, collates streaming figures from the major streaming services, including Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu, Disney+, and HBO Max. But it only does so for those viewing the content through their TV sets in the USA, skewing the figures somewhat.

Nevertheless, the figures, collated each week and released a month later, count a broad enough number of sets to be a reasonably accurate reflection of streaming habits in the USA at least. In the past, Netflix has dominated the list, with most spots taken up by Netflix originals or library content on the service. Amazon's The Boys managed to make a dent in the ratings while it was releasing new episodes, but it's since fallen down the charts, replaced by the likes of Schitt's Creek, which topped charts for the first week of October, hot on the heels of its Emmy Awards sweep. Netflix's horror series, The Haunting of Bly Manor, took the second spot that week, in its week of release.

Now, the ratings for the week of October 12 to 18 have been released, per Deadline, and The Haunting of Bly Manor has taken the top spot. In its second week of availability, the show was streamed for a total of 1.82 billion minutes, compared to 1.37 billion minutes for Schitt's CreekThe 100 and The Office, both of which regularly make the top 10, took 3rd and 4th positions, respectively, while the Great British Baking Show took 5th place with the first episode of its latest season. The top 10 was rounded out by Criminal Minds, Grey's Anatomy, NCIS, Netflix original movie Hubie Halloween and The Blacklist.

The Boys dropped off the top 10 chart entirely for the week, after being in 5th the week before. That's due to the show's final episode releasing the week prior, proving the Amazon show, while popular, doesn't capture the same re-watch audience as Netflix's library content. The top 10 once again demonstrates the strength of Netflix's back catalog and its sizeable share of the streaming market.

Shows like The Office, which will soon leave the service for Peacock, are the backbone of Netflix's business and will continue to be for a long time. The elevation of The Haunting of Bly Manor to the top spot shouldn't come as a surprise either. The Haunting of Hill House was a huge success for Netflix, and fans would have been desperate to binge the follow-up show as soon as they could. With a full week of streaming counting for this week, as opposed to just three days the week before, the series was bound to take the top spot.
