Rosario Dawson, who recently debuted fan-favorite Star Wars character Ahsoka Tano in live-action on The Mandalorian, says the character represents the best of the Jedi Order. Dawson’s casting in the previously animated-only role has been rumored for months leading up to The Mandalorian’s second season, and she did not disappoint when she finally appeared in “The Jedi.”
Ahsoka’s own relationship with the Jedi Order is a complicated one. Assigned as a padawan to Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars, Ahsoka developed her skills fighting off the forces of the Separatists. Her official time in the Order came to an end, however, after she was framed for murder in the final years of the war and expelled from the Jedi. Though she eventually cleared her name, she refused to rejoin the Order that was so quick to condemn her, living the rest of her life as an exile of sorts, similar to the old Extended Universe’s “Grey Jedi.”
That complicated past doesn’t make her any less heroic in Dawson’s eyes, however. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the actress praised Ahsoka and explained that her central moral compass was a big part of what drew her to the character.
"Since the very beginning, the way that has been pulling her is to be vigilant, and to be brave, and to be wise, and to always have her eye set on rooting out evil. "I think that's one of the reasons why so many love her. It's why I love her. She represents truly the best of the Jedi, you know?”
Ahsoka certainly has a claim to paragon status in the Star Wars universe. Her departure from the Jedi was partially due to philosophical differences – believing the Order’s strict doctrine against all emotion was a detriment to their work. In the end, that same rigid dogma contributed to the Jedi’s downfall. Ahsoka always leaned more toward a middle way of existing in the Force, not dissimilar to that of Qui-Gon Jinn, who frequently battled with the elders on the council but also learned to become one with the Force by the time of his death.
From the end of the Clone Wars through the era of the New Republic, Ahsoka continues to make her own path. She may not be driven strictly by the Jedi code of old, but she remains primarily motivated by a desire to do good and root out evil, as Dawson says. If “The Jedi” is any indication, that drive may be leading her to a confrontation with Grand Admiral Thrawn. How exactly that plays out in The Mandalorian though, remains to be seen.
