New photos from the set of Netflix’s The Witcher reveal Ciri’s (Freya Allan) new costume for season 2. Based on the works of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher's first season received some criticism for deviating from its source material and using three timelines to introduce Geralt (the “Witcher”), Yennefer, and Ciri. The fact that their stories are told decades apart doesn’t become clear until Ciri inadvertently becomes Geralt’s child of surprise in episode 4.
As season 1 progresses, the timelines gradually become more involved, with Geralt and Ciri finally finding each other in the finale. Season 2’s narrative will be more linear as the pair come to terms with their destined father/daughter roles. Recent rumors and reports suggest that the upcoming episodes will adapt Sapkowski’s Blood of Elves, which follows Geralt and Ciri at Kaer Morhen, an old keep where Witchers are trained. The biggest season 2 casting announcements were the characters of Vesemir (Geralt’s mentor/father figure), Coën, Lambert, and Eskel—all of whom are fellow Witchers. As explained in the pilot episode, women do not train to become mutated monster hunters like Geralt and company.
Per Redanian Intelligence, photos taken of the Kaer Morhen set in the United Kingdom (by Burst Photos), show Freya Allen’s character wearing a new costume for season 2. Rather than the dresses worn in season 1, she is wearing a brown/blue shirt and trousers. The look is reminiscent of Ciri’s Witcheress outfit from The Witcher video games.
Following a production hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, filming for The Witcher resumed last month. This set of photos is the first extensive look fans have gotten at scenes being filmed. Outside of Ciri’s costume, other things in the photos include a tree that’s split in two (having been struck by lightning?) and a couple of unidentified women. The makeup and costumes worn by these other characters seem to indicate that they are elves. The elven sorceress, Lara Dorren (an ancestor of Ciri), is rumored to be appearing in season 2. If one had to guess, the scene being filmed is probably a flashback/vision provoked by the powers Ciri has been grappling with since season 1.
It’s safe to say that Ciri of Cintra will no longer be the untrained princess she was in season 1. She looks (literally) poised to undergo a fair amount of combat training up under the guidance of Geralt and his fellow Witchers. It’s worth noting that the main reason women don’t become Witchers is that they normally don’t survive the Trial of the Dreams (something only three out of ten men survive). That said, Ciri never officially becomes a Witcher by name in Sapkowski’s stories. However, given The Witcher’s exhibited tendency to experiment with its source material, never say never.
