Marvel's Avengers Will Stop Boring Players' Pants Off, Crystal Dynamics Promises

Players of Marvel’s Avengers have been suffering from a lack of new content since the game was first released, but developer Crystal Dynamics is promising that things will get better soon with incoming updates. Publisher Square Enix’s action RPG take on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes launched back in September to mixed reviews, with many players praising the game's story while noting that the gameplay and overall polish left much to be desired.

One area of note is how the non-campaign single-player and multiplayer missions in Marvel’s Avengers all feel repetitive and formulaic after a while, with PC players in particular losing interest in the game en masse due to bland level designs and a chaotic matchmaking system that leaves them sitting in empty lobbies for completely separate missions. As a result, Crystal Dynamics has set out to assure weary fans that it is working on bringing in new mission types and post-endgame content in the near future in an effort to win back the players that have been driven away over the past few weeks.

Crystal Dynamics studio head Scot Amos re-iterated his team’s commitment to adding more variety to Marvel’s Avengers in a lengthy statement to Kotaku. In it, Amos speaks of a new War Zone mission type called Tachyon Rifts, a new Outpost that will serve as an entry point to new missions in the future, a difficult bonus level called AIM’s Cloning Lab, and the future inclusion of Clint Barton and Kate Bishop (who in the comics share the iconic mantle of Hawkeye) as DLC characters, as well as continued efforts to fix the game’s balancing and loot system. “Every day we fight to make the best game possible for our community,” Amos explained during his statement. “We have a great community management team at Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix who funnel all of your concerns, suggestions, and feedback to the development team daily. We are listening. We are making fixes, improvements, and additions as fast as we safely can to make Marvel’s Avengers the game we all aspire it to be.”

With its fun storyline and an impressive roster of playable characters, Marvel’s Avengers has the potential to be a great superhero game should Crystal Dynamics manage to successfully address the lack of gameplay variety in its post-campaign and multiplayer levels. It’s worth noting that EA’s Star Wars: Battlefront II had a similar - and far more glaring – situation when it launched back in 2017, only to now become a legitimately great multiplayer experience after several patches and fixes over the years. Only time will tell if Crystal Dynamics can replicate this with Marvel’s Avengers, but the developers’ apparent commitment to fixing the problems with its team-based superhero title is a good sign.
