Hamilton star Renée Elise Goldsberry has been cast in Tina Fey's Girls5Eva set to stream on Peacock. Goldsberry is best known for playing the eldest of the Schuyler sisters, Angelica Schuyler, for which she won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. In addition to her extensive theatrical career, she also appeared on several TV shows, including Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, Altered Carbon, and Fast and Furious Spy Racers.
The Wrap reports will portray the lead singer of Girls5Eva, Wickie. Her character is reportedly described as "glamorous" and "big-voiced," truly embodying what it means to be a pop diva. The character had a floundering solo career after Girls5Eva first broke up. She hopes that bringing the band back together will raise her to the level of stardom she truly deserves.
Along with Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles is a confirmed cast member. Bareilles plays another former band member, Dawn. When she grows tired of her life as a restaurant manager, she decides to reunite Wickie and the rest of the women in her former 90's band, Girls5Eva.
As for the creative team, Meredith Scardino is the show's creator and executive producer. Other Girls5Eva producers include Fey and Eric Gurian of Little Stranger, Robert Carlock (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), and Jeff Richmond and David Miner of 3 Arts Entertainment.
The series was set to premiere in Fall 2020 but has since been postponed to Peacock's 2021 lineup. As per Peacock's official description, Girls5Eva centers on "a one-hit-wonder girl group from the '90s that reunites to give their pop star dreams one more shot."
