New MODOK Series From Marvel Comics To Be Written By Patton Oswalt

A new miniseries featuring MODOK is coming to Marvel Comics this December, and the voice of MODOK himself will help write it. A new animated series featuring MODOK is in development as well, with comedian/actor Patton Oswalt voicing the titular character. But beyond that, he'll also also be lending his creative talents to MODOK: Head Games, a four part comics mini series releasing ahead of the animated series.

MODOK stands for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing. A creation of Advanced Idea Mechanics, MODOK soon ending up taking over AIM as its new leader, thanks to his near precognitive levels of intelligence and ability to create highly effective strategies to aid in their goals of world domination. However, the experiments that gave him his powers and brilliant mind resulted in a freakishly large head, forcing him to use a hover chair to be get around. While MODOK started as a villain of Captain America, he has grown to be an enemy of any and all superheroes who get in the way of AIM's goals.

Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum are serving as the showrunners for the upcoming animated series, which will see MODOK facing the hardest challenge he's ever had to deal with: a mid-life crisis. MODOK will exist as a comedy series, seeing MODOK falling on hard times, having run AIM into the ground, and struggling to keep his family together all at once. Oswalt himself will be voicing MODOK, and other stars such as Ben Schwartz, Aimee Garcia, and Melissa Fumero will voice his wife, son, and daughter. While MODOK has never had a family before in the comics (he did have a girlfriend for a short time), it looks as though Oswalt and Blum's new comic could change that. Here's the cover and synopsis from Marvel's solicitations:

¨M.O.D.O.K.: HEAD GAMES #1 (Of 4)¨JORDAN BLUM & PATTON OSWALT (W) • SCOTT HEPBURN (A) • Cover by CULLY HAMNER¨VARIANT COVER BY SKOTTIE YOUNG¨VARIANT COVER BY DOALY¨32 PGS./RATED T+ …$3.99

From Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum, showrunners of the upcoming animated Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. show on Hulu, comes a journey into the mind of one of the biggest heads in the Marvel Universe! M.O.D.O.K. is the ruthless and brilliant leader of the terrorist organization AIM, outsmarting heroes and outmaneuvering his cutthroat colleagues gunning for his position… but when he begins to be haunted by memories of a family he never had, it leaves him unsure if he is losing his freakishly-large mind, or if perhaps there is a lot more to this enormous mind… or if there is something more sinister behind these visions.

It seems like a safe bet to assume that Head Games will have have some sort of connection to the animated series. The synopsis shares that MODOK will be having visions of a family he never had. Could this be the family he will have in the show? It's certainly seems plausible. In any case, it's pretty fun to have Oswalt and Blum writing MODOK before the show, allowing them a greater agency to craft what their adaption from the comics will look like, as they'll be the ones who wrote the most recent comics. All in all, MODOK is going to be getting a kind of renaissance in the next year or so, especially considering that he's also become the main antagonist in the latest Avengers video game as well. Long live MODOK, be he on the screen or on the page.
