Even DC's Heroes Think Red Hood Was An Awful Robin | Screen Rant

The Teen Titans just revealed they agree with a widely-held opinion of DC Comics fans: Jason Todd was an awful Robin. The Robin mantle has been held by a variety of characters throughout the years. Dick Grayson was the first to put on the costume and fight crime alongside Batman in 1940. Eventually, Jason Todd took over the role in 1983, followed by Tim Drake in 1990. Stephanie Brown briefly acted as Batman’s sidekick in 2004 and Damian Wayne, who only quit as Robin this year, took over in 2009. Each young hero brought their own strengths to the table and each of them received different reactions from readers, but Jason Todd was easily the worst received.

In his initial debut as the Boy Wonder, Todd was basically just a copy of the recently departed Dick Grayson. After Crisis on Infinite Earths, however, the character was revamped, along with many other DC heroes and villains. The new Jason Todd was taken in by Batman after stealing tires off of the Batmobile. As a child growing up on the streets, Jason had a lot of anger built up inside of him and let it out when fighting. He was super angsty and his attitude often caused him to throw caution to the wind. As the character grew more unpopular, DC decided to hold a telephone poll to decide whether or not Jason would die in the infamous 1988 Batman: A Death in the Family storyline. In a 5,343 to 5,271 vote, fans decided for Jason Todd to be killed by the Joker. The character remained dead for years until eventually being resurrected as the Red Hood in 2005.

Teen Titans #45 by writer Robbie Thompson and artist Javier Fernandez shows that some DC heroes agree with the fans about Jason Todd’s standings among the rest of the Robins. Damian Wayne is on the run, which has left the Titans fragmented. While he is off causing trouble, Damian leaves “clues” for the team to follow. In their search for Robin, the Teen Titans are attacked by Gizmo. As the young heroes fight off a horde of robots, Red Hood arrives and ends the battle early. Red Hood then tells the Titans that he believes Damian is sending them on a wild goose chase.

In a condescending but potentially insightful dressing down, Red Hood instructs the Teen Titans to “leave Damian to the adults.” As the team regroups and discusses what just happened, Crush refers to Red Hood as “everyone’s fourth favorite Robin.” This is definitely a low-blow but considering Jason Todd’s history, her comment is right on point. None of the Titans object to the insult either, suggesting that Crush is just saying what’s on everybody’s mind. Teen Titans readers can definitely have fun speculating the rest of Crush’s scale of Robins. Considering the short amount of time that Stephanie Brown held the mantle, Crush could have left her out of the running. If that is the case, then Red Hood is at the bottom of her list.

Even if she is counting Stephanie though, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Damian take the lowest spot. After all, the Teen Titans aren’t too pleased with him at the moment. Whatever the case may be, it’s clear that Jason Todd’s days as Robin aren’t remembered too fondly by DC’s heroes or their fans. Luckily, he seems to have found his place as the Red Hood.
