Zack Snyder thought about giving black suit Superman facial hair and a mullet hairdo in Justice League. Prior to the release of the 2017 film in theaters, rumors were rampant that Henry Cavill will wear the Man of Steel's infamous dark costume. Fans held out hope that this was going to be the case, but was ultimately let down when it wasn't in the movie as it was part of the elements from Snyder's original plan that was scrapped in post-credits. Now, with the filmmaker finally getting his chance to finish his vision through a four-part HBO Max project, everyone is once again excited about the prospect.
Instead of saving the reveal in the new film, Snyder opted to use black suit Superman in his upcoming miniseries' marketing. He debuted footage of the character in the aforementioned costume at last month's fan-organized Justice Con, and followed it up with Justice League's official teaser featuring more of it. With that already confirmed, he's also been openly talking about the process of crafting the look for Cavill.
Appearing at a roundtable with Reel in Motion, Snyder shared his thought process in creating the DCEU's black suit look for Superman in Justice League. Aside from the costume itself, the director also considered its overall aesthetic, and at one point, he even contemplated on giving him facial hair and a mullet. Ultimately, he decided against both but reveals that the beard is still in the cards for the character.
"I think that the beard is a possibility, the mullet... it's just a tough one. It's hard, it's hard to make it look badass."
While there's a precedent of Superman having this look in the comics, it's still a tricky thing to execute since it can look campy when translated in live-action, especially with the tone that Snyder is going for in his Justice League. On top of that, the facial hair may also relive the controversy regarding Cavill's mustache debacle that resulted in Superman looking odd in the 2017 theatrical release for Justice League. For context, the actor was sporting a '70s mustache for his villainous role in Mission: Impossible — Fallout when he was called back to do reshoots for Justice League. Paramount disallowed him to shave the facial hair as he reprised his role as Superman forcing Warner Bros. to remove it in post-production. Unfortunately, the end result didn't look good at all. For what it's worth, however, Cavill is arguably one of the few people who can pull off a full facial hair and a mullet hairstyle at this time, so one can't really fault Snyder for considering the idea.
Whether or not fans will see Cavill's Superman with either facial hair or mullet remains to be seen. It's safe to say that it's not going to be Snyder's Justice League and beyond that, there's still no word on when the actor will pop up again as the character. As it is, there are no plans for Man of Steel 2 and there's no word yet if another Justice League project is in the pipeline. That said, perhaps if the HBO Max miniseries proves to be a hit, Warner Bros. will reassess their current plans and use their poster character more prominently moving forward.
