Wolverine is Helping Cable Make a New Love Connection

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Wolverine #3 and Cable #2

Wolverine is known as "the best at what he does," but is matchmaking actually one of his many skills? Logan hasn't had much luck in the romance department himself throughout the years, but perhaps he could help others find love. And as seen in recent comics, a new young couple is coming to the forefront, and they may have Wolverine to thank for it.

Young Nate Summers, now going by Cable, had a secret admirer that only Logan knew about, and in Wolverine #3 by Benjamin Percy, Adam Kubert, and Frank Martin, he exploits it. So Wolverine isn't necessarily doing this out of the kindness of his heart, but it seems like he helped the Cable stan get a date. As seen in the latest issue of Cable #2, Nate is dating The Stepford Cuckoos.

In Wolverine #3, an arrangement was struck where if the sisters got Kid Omega to go on a mission with Logan, he would then set them up on a date with Cable. The sisters goaded Omega into going by flirting with him and telling him how hot it was that he was going to take on Pale Girl. Wolverine needed Omega to trick the powerful psychic, but Kid Omega wasn't keen on going on another mission with Logan, as they often end in Omega's death. In his own words: "I am sick to death of dying," but the sisters quickly got him to cave. So with the girls' end of the bargain met, the rest was up to Wolverine. No one would've been surprised if Logan didn't keep his side of the deal, but it seems as if he did.

Cable's latest issue sees him going on a date with one of the sisters, and they discuss how he has already been on a date with one of the others. Though neither of the dates seems promising as the one readers see him on is actually a mission, and the previous one sounded like it didn't end well. Though the two young mutants share a kiss in the issue, so it looks as if there is still a chance. Or it could just be the Cukoos having some fun at the expense of the hero. In one sequence, we see the other Stepfords laughing at Nate and suggesting the amount of heartache they will cause him.

It remains to be seen whats to make of the relationship, but if it does last, Wolverine is at least partially responsible. Wolverine as a matchmaker is an unlikely turn for the usually cold and distant mutant, but it's entertaining to see nonetheless. Cable himself is an unlikely candidate to be in a relationship, but it is interesting to see this side of the young Nate Summers. What will these recent events mean for Wolverine and Cable? Will Logan set up any other potential lovers? Will the new couple become a long term item?

Gerry Duggan wrote Cable#2 with artist Phil Noto, who also did the cover.
