David Arquette Blames Scream 3's Constant Script Changes For Why It's Bad

David Arquette has opened up about why he thinks Scream 3 turned out to be so poor. Arquette has starred as fan-favorite character Dewey Riley, a local sheriff that has been a staple of the horror franchise, in all four Scream films. He last appeared as the character in 2011's Scream 4, which earned mostly favorable reviews from critics and grossed $97 million worldwide against a budget of $40 million. It was recently confirmed that Arquette would be returning for Scream 5, which is set to hit theaters in 2021.

Scream 3 reunited audiences with Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), who decides to visit the set of Stab 3, the third installment in the horror franchise based on the Woodsboro murders. At the same time, a new Ghostface killer emerges who begins targeting the original survivors and those playing them in the Hollywood film. The sequel was once again directed by Wes Craven and starred Campbell, Arquette, Courtney Cox, Liev Schreiber, Patrick Dempsey, Emily Mortimer, Jenny McCarthy, Parker Posey, and Patrick Warburton. Not only did the sequel receive some of the worst reviews in the beloved series, but it is also considered by many to be the weakest in the franchise. Recently, Arquette opened up about why he thinks Scream 3 fell short of expectations.

In a recent interview with ComicBook, David Arquette explained why he thinks Scream 3 turned out to be one of the most maligned entries in the franchise. When speaking about the third film, he states, "They were rewriting the whole time. We’d get pages like on the day of shooting. It was just kind of all over the place. It’s interesting, and it’s funny, but it’s a different tone from the rest.

While Scream 3 may not have gotten very many positive reviews, the film did benefit from having Arquette and having him return for Scream 5 will no doubt benefit the sequel. Arquette has even expressed interest in returning for more Scream sequels down the line. Along with Arquette, franchise star Courteney Cox has also been confirmed to return for Scream 5, bringing another fan-favorite character, Gale Weathers, back into the fold. Due to the unfortunate passing of revered director Wes Craven, the fifth installment will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet, who recently helmed Ready Or Not, which turned out to be a hit with critics and audiences alike.

Scream 3 may not have been the best entry in the entertaining horror franchise, but it possesses more charm and entertainment value than most entries in the slasher genre today. The sequel, like its predecessors, is wonderfully meta and parodies most horror films. Arquette's sentiments certainly help explain why the film's script was its biggest hindrance, the dialogue and overall story lacking the overall bite and ingenuity of its predecessors. However, it's refreshing to see him agree with the majority of fans and provide a reasonable explanation as to why it was received so poorly. Hopefully, now fans can rewatch Scream 3 and be more open to forgiving it for its shortcomings with Arquette's comments in mind.
