Great Heist Season 2: Release Date & Story Details | Screen Rant

Here's everything we know regarding The Great Heist season 2, including its potential to happen and what its story could be about. Based on a real-life bank robbery, the six-episode Colombian series stays true to historical events but mostly embellishes the facts in favor of accessible entertainment.

In The Great Heist season 1, a Colombian business man named Chayo (Andrés Parra) plots to swindle the country's central bank. He's married with a 15-year-old daughter but needs money to sustain a bourgeois lifestyle. The Netflix series follows Chayo's attempts to organize a reliable team, which is the narrative foundation for the primary conflict. For example, Chayo's buddy, Molina (Christian Tappan), is mostly down for the proverbial "one last job" but unfortunately needs a liver transplant. El Dragón (Waldo Urrego) has the necessary resume credentials for a big heist, yet he's still influenced by the human element. Meaning, El Dragón is less of a traditional movie villain and more of a "sophisticated" criminal - which is exactly why's he's recruited by Chayo.

The focal robbery in The Great Heist season 1 takes up the first three episodes. The second half of the series focuses on the aftermath, as Chayo and company must deal with the consequences of their actions. Some characters are literally killed off, while others make the most of their freedom. For dramatic purposes, the Netflix series deviates from what actually transpired in real life, which could leave the door open for The Great Heist season 2.

Netflix hasn't officially greenlit The Great Heist season 2, though a second installment is certainly possible. The original six-episode storyline ends with clarity about the focal robbery and even the fates of the main characters, yet the Colombian premise technically allows for a crossover with other Netflix crime productions, most notably the original Narcos series about Pablo Escobar's Colombia-based drug ring. Expect Netflix executives to track streaming numbers for several months after The Great Heist's August 2020 premiere before making an official renewal or cancellation decision. If it does happen, The Great Heist season 2 could possibly release in 2022.

The Great Heist was seemingly designed to be a one-and-done limited series. As for the big picture, though, it's possible that Netflix could somehow link one of the main characters to the Narcos franchise, whether it's for the original Colombian narrative or for Narcos: Mexico. After all, the real-life Chayo was reportedly a member of the Medellin cartel, and so The Great Heist season 2 could theoretically crossover with Narcos. For now, though, The Great Heist season 1 appears to be a limited series without a long-term future.
