COD: Modern Warfare & Warzone Patch Nerfs Weapons, Fixes Shotgun Exploit

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone’s latest update includes tweaks to several weapons, including a fix for an exploit that turned the FR 5.56 assault rifle into a one-shot killing machine. Call of Duty Season 5’s recent launch added a lot of content to both Modern Warfare and Warzone, but that much change doesn’t come without some consequences that need to be addressed in future patches.

One seemingly minor change that came to Call of Duty recently was an adjustment to the FR 5.56 assault rifle that majorly increased its effective range. As the FR 5.56 is a pretty underpowered gun, it must have looked like a small change, but it ended up having a big effect on the game. As players quickly discovered, that range increase also seemed to apply to the rifle’s underbarrel shotgun attachment. That range boost allowed the underbarrel shotgun to kill enemies with full health and armor at 15 meters in one shot. Once it realized what was happening, Infinity Ward promised that it would fix the exploit as soon as possible.

Just a few days after the 5.56 exploit appeared, Infinity Ward has released a patch to fix it. According to Infinity Ward’s latest Modern Warfare and Warzone patch notes, the developer has “fixed damage falloff for the FR 5.56 underbarrel shotgun” and “clamped close lethal damage,” meaning that players should expect to see more reasonable performance from the attachment at range. Along with that much-needed fix, Infinity Ward also adjusted values on some other weapons. The Bruen MK9, ISO, and 725 Sawed-Off Shotgun have all received nerfs. Infinity Ward also fixed another unidentified exploit at the Prison in Warzone.

It’s good to see Infinity Ward reacting so quickly to fix an issue that was surely making Warzone a less enjoyable experience for some players - that is, the ones on the receiving end of the 5.56’s overpowered shotgun attachment. However, there are still quite a few frustratingly persistent issues haunting the game, including long-running glitches that cause players’ item drops to disappear and a particularly disturbing one that transforms people into tornados of glitched textures.

Keeping games as huge and complex as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone running can’t be an easy task, but publisher Activision has a lot riding on keeping players happy right now. With the reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War just around the corner, Activision needs players on its side and assured that the next game in the series will be worth coming back for.
