Shang-Chi is set to face a new formidable opponent in an upcoming comic. The October solicitation for Marvel provides us information for a new villain Shang-Chi will face off against. Shang-Chi #2 will introduce an all new character (or is she?) named Sister Hammer.
The cover art by Philip Tan shows the hero seemingly falling while a threatening-looking woman wielding a melee weapon is right on his tail. The woman - who is expected to be Sister Hammer - is bald and menacing, with a tattoo of some sort on her forehead. She is also undoubtedly a warrior of kinds, as she is sporting Wonder Woman-esque gauntlets on her wrists. This new villain, surrounded by mystery, looks to be a formidable opponent for Marvel's master of martial arts.
The synopsis for the issue reads as follows: "Shang-Chi may have finally met his match in the form of this strange new assailant, Sister Hammer- But Who Is She Really? Find out in this shocking reunion!" Shang-Chi is about to go through some retconning in his new comic series, beginning in September. With him getting the movie treatment in the MCU, the comics seemingly are looking to match up with the movie version of the character. Both the movie and the new comic series are shrouded in mystery all anyone can do at this point is speculate. And speculation suggests that Shang-Chi's parentage will be changed in the movie, so the comic is likely to follow suit. There's theories that Shang-Chi will have his father revealed to be none other than The Mandarin, who has already been cast in the movie. What does any of this have to do with Sister Hammer? There is a yet-to-be-revealed character in the film being played by Awkwafina that may end up being this newly-introduced character.
Looking back at the synopsis of Shang-Chi #2, it is clear that Sister Hammer is someone from the hero's past. "Shocking reunion!" suggests that the two characters know each other and possibly are even related. One character she could end up being is Fa Lo Suee. Suee is Shang-Chi's half-sister in previous storylines. The two were often at odds as Shang-Chi's Sister took the villainous path. This character being reintroduced in the retconned story for Shang-Chi is smart and a strong possibility.
The possibility of the movie shaking up Shang-Chi's family could also point towards this character. Recently an onset video of Simu Liu and Awkwafina surfaced where the two looked to be working together for unknown reasons, suggesting that the two characters are familiar with one another. Making Shang-Chi's father an ultimate big baddie in The Mandarin is going to make for interesting family dynamics. Adding a sister that wants to follow daddies' villainous path only adds to the drama.
All of these questions for both the movie and comics will have to wait to be answered. The film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, directed by Destin Cretton, is slated for release in May 2021. Shang-Chi #1 will come out this September, while the second issue will follow in October. Who Sister Hammer is and how she relates to Shang-Li will be answered in Shang- Chi #2, written by Gene Luen Yang and illustrated by the team of Dike Ruan & Phillip Tan. Make sure to read all of these upcoming new issues as they may give clues as to how the MCU will change Shang-Chi in his blockbuster movie.
