Who was behind the anonymous messages that the Liars were receiving throughout Pretty Little Liars was a mystery that started in the very first episode and wasn't fully revealed until the last episodes. Though the Liars originally thought that it had to have been Alison as she was the only person to know some of the secrets that "A" seemed to, it became clear as the show went on that not only was it not Alison, but "A" wasn't just a single person - it was a whole team of people.
Each time someone was revealed to be on the A-Team, it was a huge plot twist. But, watching the show while knowing about who was going to be revealed to be working with "A" puts a whole new spin of some of the details of the series. Things that many fans looked past when they were originally watching the show suddenly seem a lot more clear and are obvious clues as to future A-Team reveals.
10 The Fashion Show
Early in the series, Alison's mom approached the Liars about walking in a memorial fashion show that was going to be held in Alison's memory. Fans will remember that this fashion show was directed by Mona who was incredibly controlling about every detail of the fashion show. When the fashion show was hacked and the sweet moment remembering Alison turned horrifying, everyone wondered how that could happen.
But, knowing that Mona was "A" at this point in the series, it makes the fact that the show went so horribly wrong despite the fact that she was so controlling over her job as the director of the fashion show a lot more understandable.
9 Aria's Fake Video Calls
The first time viewers saw the terrifying messages from "A" that came in the form of video calls from a fake Aria, they seemed like nothing more than a creepy prank being played on the Liars by the A-Team. Many fans spent so much time trying to focus on who could have been making these calls to Aria that they forgot to consider what they could mean for the identity of Uber A.
The fact that the calls were targeting Aria and showed her a fake version of herself on the screen definitely seem like it was a clue that there was a fake version of someone else in Rosewood. Although Uber A being Spencer's sneaky twin seemed like it came out of nowhere, clues like this one were there all along.
8 Spencer's Choice In Accessories
Many fans have gone back to the later episodes of Pretty Little Liars in order to try to figure out if there were any scenes in which everyone thought they were watching Spencer when really it was her twin, Alex. Alex was definitely a sneaky character and there were a lot of times that she pretended to be Spencer, but there's one easy way that viewers could have identified her sooner.
Throughout the series, particularly after Uber A becomes a major player in Rosewood, Spencer is always seen wearing a watch. But, when it's Alex on the screen, her wrists are bare or only have bracelets. The fact that Spencer's accessories were switched up was a clue to the fact that she wasn't actually Spencer that was right under viewers' noses.
7 Mona's Messages
Throughout the series, the Liars were the main people that received mysterious messages from the A-Team. While other people in their lives like their family members and significant others were occasionally targets, it was really rare and only for major storylines. But, there was one character who got an unusually high number of minor messages from the A-Team: Mona.
The fact that Mona was so often showing off her text messages from the mysterious "A" when no one else in the school was really getting them should've been a huge red flag. This was clearly done to throw the Liars off her trail and make them think that she was a mere victim, too.
6 Mona's Hacker Skills
During the second season, Mona went out of her way to help Emily to get back onto the swim team. The fact that Mona was so quick and capable at hacking into the principal's computer didn't seem like a big deal at the time, but knowing that she was "A" made her computer skills suddenly make so much more sense. It's obvious now to viewers that she helped Emily regain her spot on the team in order to secure some trust from the Liars and avoid any suspicion.
5 Spencer's Disappearing Coat
During the final season of Pretty Little Liars, there was a scene that confused just about everyone, but also helped many people to further their belief that Spencer definitely had a twin.
The episode followed Spencer, wearing a chic white jacket, as she tried to track down Mary Drake. But, the episode changed gears suddenly and showed Spencer, now wearing a black shirt and her white jacket nowhere to be seen, in the airport arguing with Wren when she bumped into Ezra. Was Spencer in two places at once? Was she simply incredibly fast at wardrobe changes? Nope, this was an early clue that there were two Spencers running around.
4 The Halloween Twins
In a flashback episode, Alison told a story about two little twin girls. In her story, one of the twins murdered the other and was sent away. Many fans thought this was a reference to the plot twist in the book series where Alison has a twin sister, Courtney, who had taken her place in life when she was young.
While this wasn't necessarily a reference to Alison's evil twin sister being "A", it wasn't a complete red herring, either. Many fans wrote this story off as typical Halloween special spookiness, but it was an early clue that someone was going to have an evil twin.
3 Targeting Hanna
Although all the Liars were targets of the A-Team's blackmail and torture, there was definitely one of them who got it the worst: Hanna.
In the year that passed between Alison's disappearance and the A-Team's messages to the Liars, Hanna became friends with Mona, a classmate that Alison had previously been tormenting. Hanna reuniting with the Liars and mourning Alison took er away from Mona, giving Mona ample motivation to take her frustration out on Hanna most intensely.
2 "Hefty Hanna's Order"
It was implied that most people in the Liars' school believed that Hanna lost all of her weight through surgery. Only Alison and Mona knew that it was because she was suffering from an eating disorder, but "A" chose to use it to blackmail Hanna into getting her mother's money back. The fact that only one Rosewood resident knew about Hanna's struggle when she received this message should have been a clue to viewers that she was on the A-Team.
1 Ezra At Aria's Funeral
Although it was revealed later that Ezra being on the A-Team was a red herring and not what it looked like, Ezra was up to some shady business. In order to research for his book, he had been spying on the Liars and he had a past relationship with Alison, all of which he kept secret through a lot of the series. In the first episode, Ezra was shown to be in attendance at Alison's funeral despite the fact that he allegedly didn't know her, meaning he should have had no reason to attend her services.
