It looks as though the Marvel Universe will be trading one alien invasion for another when Marvel's Empyre concludes. In a recent press release from Marvel Comics, it was announced that the upcoming issue Web of Venom: Empyre's End will see the Symbiote God Knull claiming his throne at the conclusion of Empyre. The issue will herald his upcoming attack on Earth with his symbiote armies in the King in Black event, to be released later this year. Read on to learn more.
The upcoming lead-in issue comes from writer Clay McLeod Chapman with art by Guiu Villanova. It seems as though the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and other Marvel heroes won't get any time to breathe after dealing with the Cotati forces. Knull's arrival is imminent and it's going to take everything they have to weather the symbiote storm headed their way. King in Black will be the sequel event to Absolute Carnage, where Eddie Brock and his symbiote Venom were forced to release Knull from his cosmic prison in order to save Eddie's son. Now, Knull is headed for Earth seeking revenge and wanting to assimilate and destroy the entire planet with his symbiote armies. Venom's unwilling freeing of Knull was something that he had been keeping somewhat of a secret, hoping that he could deal with the problem on his own without having to reveal what he had done. However, the events of the Venom Island arc, as well as his son's strange control over symbiotes, make him realize that he's going to need help. As a result, Eddie recently came clean to the Avengers about the Symbiote God, so at least more heroes than just Venom know that Knull is on his way, and can try to prepare as best they can.
According to the announcement, King in Black lead writer Donny Cates is incredibly excited for what's to come: "As far as event books go, this is the coolest, darkest, most heavy metal, Cthulhu dark horror thing I've ever been able to do," Venom writer Donny Cates said when King of Black was announced. “I still can’t believe that Marvel is letting us go as dark and scary as we’re going."
It will be interesting to see exactly how Knull will be making his entrance as Empyre concludes. In the image itself, Gamora, a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, looks to be in the background, while Knull stands front and center in the image, a bloody, black sword in his left hand, an a powerful red glow in his raised right. Potentially, this could indicate that Web of Venom: Empyre's End might see Knull not having reached Earth just yet, but is on his way, coming into contact with some of Marvel's cosmic heroes like the Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova, and more. It could a a preview for the levels of destruction and chaos that are to come for Earth once Knull arrives with his symbiote horde. In any case, fans will get to see Knull take this throne when Web of Venom: Empyre's End releases later this October.
