Harry Potter: 10 Ways Voldemort Got Worse & Worse | ScreenRant

In cinema and the general pop culture zeitgeist, there is a selection of villains that transcend their iconography beyond their property, known in name and appearance to those who are not even fans of the franchise—Darth Vader, the Joker, even Hannibal Lecter, and, of course, Lord Voldemort.

Throughout his lifetime as Tom Marvolo Riddle and later Lord Voldemort, the Dark Lord rose to power as the greatest Dark Wizard of all time, wreaking havoc on the magical and muggle worlds in his quest. With everything fans know about Voldemort from birth to death, there is a multitude of ways in which he got worse and worse.

10 Treatment Of Animals & Then People

Early on in his life, Tom Riddle displayed cruel and evil tendencies that manifested themselves in the form of his treatment and subsequent murder of some animals of other orphans, which later turned into the abuse and killing of people.

He murdered members of his family, including his father and grandparents, while still at Hogwarts, as well as getting the Chamber opened, which in turn caused the death of a student, for which he framed Hagrid. From there on, Voldemort murdered countless people, such as an Albanian pleasant, Hepzibah Smith, and a slew of people that would become his Inferi.

9 Physical Appearance

As Tom Riddle/Voldemort became eviler and much less human with a fragmented soul, his physical appearance diminished significantly, from a regular young man to a ghoul-esque figure.

When the events of the memorable night at Godric's Hollow occurred, Voldemort had lost his physical being. But he was still tied to the physical realm by his Horcruxes, using his remaining power of possession to take the forms of animals and, later, Quirrell. From there, with the help of a couple of loyal followers, he became the noseless white figure that has become so well known.

8 Pure-Blood Purist

It is a well-known fact of Voldemort that he pretty much-despised Mudbloods and the idea of the mating of Muggles with Witches and Wizards. It is common for Slytherins to be blood-purists, but not to Voldemort's extreme.

At sixteen, he released the Basilisk to purge the school of Mudbloods. Voldemort became utterly disgusted with Muggles and their world, later claiming Muggle-borns stole their magic and deserved fitting punishment. As a half-blood, he was more lenient towards their treatment, but still despised their Muggle heritage like he did his own.

7 Manipulation

From a young age, Tom Riddle had the uncanny ability to manipulate people, and draw them in with his charisma and charm, using them for whatever he desired.

He convinced the teachers of Hogwarts he was a model student and exceptional person, convinced 'friends' he cared for them, and manipulated Rowena Ravenclaw into revealing the location of the diadem. Voldemort used people to further his goals, nothing more.

6 Arrogance & Lack Of Comprehension

Despite being incredibly intelligent, Voldemort lacked in a lot of areas. He was arrogant about himself and unable to view the bigger picture, focusing narrowly on singular goals, aiding his downfall.

On top of this arrogance, Voldemort lacked comprehension of many essential human traits. Coming from a relationship of coerced love, Voldemort had no understanding of love, nor a general understanding of friendship, empathy, or the acceptance of death.

5 Horcruxes

Throughout his time at Hogwarts, Tom Riddle became fascinated with Dark Magic and got caught up in a specific piece of magic known as Horcruxes.

Later, of course, Voldemort would himself create Horcruxes, splitting his soul into six separate pieces over time as well as an extra one in Harry Potter, and an eighth piece that rested in him.

4 Starting The Death Eaters

While at Hogwarts, Tom Riddle had a group of friends who themselves would later become the first Death Eaters, his loyal followers, and Dark Witches and Wizards, who helped wreak chaos on the world.

Riddle initially created the Knights of Walpurgis, which were his gang at Hogwarts, and later renamed them Death Eaters, with the group expanding and becoming the collection that fans have come to know and hate.

3 Starting Two Wizarding Wars

With his Death Eaters, his ruthless ambition, and the hiring of many creatures and beings who had gotten cast from the Magical world, Voldemort started the First Wizarding War, which lasted eleven long years.

After the events at Godric's Hollow, Voldemort obviously left, but upon his return, when officially seen by the Minister of Magic, Voldemort's plan came to a head, and he began the second war that raged on until his death at the Battle of Hogwarts.

2 Ruling Over The Wizarding World

During this war, Voldemort managed to rule the Wizarding community in England, beginning with Severus Snape's murdering of Dumbledore, the only Wizard Voldemort feared.

From there, Snape ruled Hogwarts with strict rules were in place by Voldemort and his followers. As well as that, Voldemort ruled the Ministry of Magic with Pius Thicknesse as puppet Minister, and created a Totalitarian state which saw evil and chaos reign and non-pure-bloods mistreated.

1 Obsession

Pretty much everything done in Voldemort's wicked life boils down to his unwavering, incomparable obsession. Not necessarily obsession with one singular thing, but with many.

He became obsessed with immortality and avoiding death out of fear. He was obsessed with getting the Elder Wand, as well as a general obsession with Harry Potter, with power, with Dark Magic, with blood-purity, and pretty much with everything he did as a Wizard.
