Fortnite’s latest update has led data miners to a new set of challenges tied to a crashed spaceship that seems set to land in the game soon. Despite being one of the world’s most popular games for several years now, Fortnite only officially exited beta in June, in the midst of Chapter 2 Season 3.
Most of the current Fortnite season has been based around an aquatic theme, with challenges based around sharks and skins with diving themes. It also heavily features Aquaman, with items based on the DC character making their way into the game. A recent update even added Aquaman’s nemesis, Black Manta. As a season that spans the middle of the summer, July 4th fell in the middle of Fortnite Season 3, and Aquman briefly took a backseat to Captain America over the holiday weekend.
Data miners have found evidence of a new location coming to Fortnite that seems rather out of character with Season 3’s water theme. Fortnite leaker FortTory shared images on Twitter of a crashed spaceship that’s said to be coming to the game, which show the ship as well as its pilot. Fellow leaker Hypex posted an image of what appears to be the same spacesuit that he pilot is wearing on the outfit select screen. The seemingly incongruous additions actually do fit into the season’s aquatic theme based on where the crashed ship is meant to appear. When the ship crashes, it looks like it will land on a small island that doesn’t currently exist on the map, meaning that water levels will have to fall again before the ship arrives, as they’ve been doing throughout the season.
Along with the new location and outfit, the leaks reveal new challenges coming to Fortnite. FortTory posted a list of challenge names based on the spacecraft, which seem to indicate that players will have to go through a questline of repairing the ship and starting its launch sequence before having to stop it from taking off. FortTory theorizes that it may actually be some hostile character that tries to launch the ship, leading players to have to stop it.
The flooded map in Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 3 has led to a lot of changes for the battle royale, forcing players to change their strategies and giving them lots of new locations to explore. The next set of interstellar challenges coming to the game look decidedly different from what’s come before, meaning they could even tie into an upcoming season more than they fit into the current one.
Fortnite is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, and mobile devices.
