Thor's brother Loki, the god of mischief, is getting his own TV show on Disney+, so here's everything we know about it so far. Tom Hiddleston has so far played Loki in six Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, starting with 2011's Thor and most recently appearing in Avengers: Endgame during a "time heist" that revisited the events of The Avengers. Loki has been everything from an untrustworthy ally to an outright villain in the Marvel movies, but now he'll be the star of his very own series.
Loki's showrunner is Michael Waldron, who previously worked on Community and Rick and Morty, so we can probably expect him to bring some comedy elements to the show. Currently Loki is being planned as a miniseries, but there's always the possibility of a continuation into multiple seasons if it proves successful.
He may be a rascal, but Loki is as well-loved as any of the Avengers (perhaps even more), and fans are eager to see him back on the screen. From release date information to plot details, here's everything we know about Loki so far.
The Loki TV show doesn't yet have an exact premiere date, but we do know it's slated to arrive on Disney+ sometime in spring 2021. WandaVision was also originally planned to debut around that time, but it got bumped forward to December 2020. Production on the Loki show commenced in January 2020, but the Coronavirus pandemic put a halt to the proceedings, as it did to many movies and TV shows. If Loki is able to resume production soon, there's a chance it could still debut in 2021, but that gets less likely as more time passes.
Fans who watched Loki die (admittedly not for the first time) in Avengers: Infinity War may be confused by him returning in a TV show - but it's easily explained. According to the official synopsis, Loki follows Thor's unruly (adopted) brother as he "pops up throughout human history as [an] unlikely influencer on historical events." This is made possible by starring the version of Loki from the Avengers: Endgame timeline where he escaped Avengers custody with the Tesseract, enabling him to interfere with human history via his own means of time travel. Based on set photos and reports, it would appear Loki begins his series in the custody of the Time Variance Authority, a kind of time travel police force, and there's also rumors Kang the Conquerer will appear.
Tom Hiddleston will obviously reprise his role as Loki and function as the series' lead, and it would be surprising if Chris Hemsworth didn't at least drop in for a cameo, given his love of side projects like Team Thor. Owen Wilson was also announced as part of the cast in early 2020, and set photos suggest he's possibly the head of the TVA. Another confirmed addition is British actress Sophia Di Martino, who reports have suggested might play a female version of Loki. It's also been rumored that the Loki series could introduce Sera, who would become the MCU's first transgender character. Black Mirror's Gugu Mbatha-Raw, The Walking Dead's Cailey Fleming, and Star Wars' Richard E. Grant have also been cast in so far undisclosed roles.
While this hasn't been officially confirmed by Marvel, reports suggest that the Loki TV show will directly set-up the events of Thor: Love and Thunder by seeing Loki somehow return to the main MCU timeline, with an alternate version of Mjolnir in tow. This will reportedly be used to facilitate Jane Foster's transformation into The Mighty Thor. Additionally, Disney boss Bob Iger has confirmed that Loki will connect somehow to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, another MCU Phase 4 release. What form that connection will take remains to be seen.
During the 2020 Super Bowl, Disney+ released a combo trailer for some of its upcoming Marvel Studios series, Loki among them. Loki got the least amount of footage, but what's shown supports the idea that the God of Mischief is locked up in some kind of time travel jail when the series begins. One assumes it'll only be a matter of time before a full Loki trailer provides more insight.
