Revenge can't be contained in just three movies, so will there be a John Wick 4? One of the best wholly original movie series of the 2010s, the John Wick franchise has succeeded thanks to a mix of intensely choreographed action and ever-deepening alt-world building.
The story of John Wick is pretty simple. A retired assassin's dog is killed, bringing him out of retirement. But this is no regular assassin: this is John Wick, the Baba Yaga. His violence is brutal and drive for revenge relentless; by the time of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, he's enacting his balletic gun-fu against the might of the ruling High Table. And, it seems, that's just the start.
John Wick 3 was teased as the culmination of a trilogy, but its ending leaves the story wide open for John Wick 4. And, unsurprisingly given Parabellum's box office success, a fourth movie was announced after just four days of release. Here's everything we know about John Wick 4's development, story and release date. It's fair to say, we haven't visited The Continental for the last time.
John Wick 4 was originally assigned a release date of May 21, 2021. This would've put it in direct competition with fellow Keanu Reeves-fronted sequel The Matrix 4. However, Reeves was set to film John Wick 4 after Matrix 4, and thanks to Coronavirus production shutdowns, that's no longer possible in time for their formerly shared release date. Now, John Wick 4 is officially slated to release on May 27, 2022.
While official details concerning John Wick 4's story are being kept secret for now, there was always clearly a plan for more John Wick, given the ending of Chapter 3 - Parabellum. After an intense fight to protect The Continental, Manager Winston shoots and seemingly kills John to regain the High Table's favor. John, however, isn't dead, and is taken to the Bowery King who speaks of revenge. Asking if John's angry, the battered and bruised assassin growls, "Yeah." This would quite clearly set up a John Wick 4 where John and the Bowery King work together against both the High Table and The Continental, delivering the all-out war that the Parabellum title teased.
But just because John Wick's plotting revenge doesn't mean audiences won't get anything from this world until 2022. Stahelski is currently working on a John Wick TV spinoff for Starz called The Continental centered on the coin-exchanging hotel. The series will follow a new character, but potentially feature a Keanu Reeves cameo (although Ian McShane is unlikely to return). This will likely premiere before John Wick 4.
