Heroes in film and television used to survive something unsurvivable against all odds, and often end with a happily ever after. Like the Schwarzenegger film, Last Action Hero, when he gets shot in the "real world" and nearly escapes death by returning in his "film world" and finding that it was just a scratch.
Game of Thrones is partly to blame for the trend of unexpectedly killing off main characters, and bringing people back from the dead has become so normal that it takes the magic out of emotional character deaths. Sometimes though, the natural order of life prevails, again, against the odds. Here's a list of characters who prove that you can't escape death, no matter how hard you try.
8 Nicolas Flamel
Nicolas Flamel was a french alchemist who created the Philosopher's Stone, the magical object that made it possible for him and his wife, Perenelle Flamel, to live for six centuries. Nicolas was born in the early 1300s and died in the mid-1990s when it was decided that the stone should be destroyed.
As Albus Dumbledore said to Harry Potter, Nicolas and his wife had enough elixir to put their business in order, and then they would die. The stone itself was destroyed because of a certain dark wizard that shall not be named attempted to steal it so he could restore his body and come back to power.
7 Beric Dondarrion
Beric Dondarrion is the character that played an interesting role and had more meaning to his life than he originally was supposed to have. This knight was one of Ned Stark's minions who was sent to execute Sir Gregor Clegane, aka The Mountain, and ends up being killed by the latter and resurrected by Thoros.
He went on and created the Brotherhood Without Banners with his followers. Later he would be killed many times and resurrected again until he finally falls bravely in the war against the Army of the Dead.
6 Thanos
Thanos of Titan, described as The Most Powerful Being in the Universe, was a warlord whose main objective and obsession was bringing the universe to balance. At least that's what he thought he was doing by slaughtering civilizations across the universe. After his plan succeeded and he wiped out trillions by just snapping his fingers while using the Infinity Stones, he was tracked down by what was left of The Avengers and killed by Thor.
He had his second chance of doing the same (or even worse) when The Avengers executed a "time heist" in their attempt to bring back those who Thanos "snapped away." This time, Thanos failed because of Iron Man, who snapped Thanos and his army from existence, for good.
5 Captain Barbossa
Captain Hector Barbossa was a pirate, a big lover of gold, comfort, and a monkey who he named Jack. Jack Sparrow's ex-first mate did everything to gain control over the sea and dealt with almost every enemy that challenged that control.
He was killed by Jack Sparrow on Isla de Muerta and was then brought back by Calypso, but in the end, he sacrificed his life to put an end to Armando Salazar.
4 Agent Smith
Smith, who was in charge of finding and destroying terrorists, aka people who were freed from The Matrix, was killed by Neo in the first film of the trilogy when the latter finally realized he's the chosen one. According to The Matrix's protocols, Smith should've followed the deletion procedure, but he didn't. He became a virus and infected the whole Matrix by copying himself until there was no one left but him.
Neo went to the Machine City and made a deal with Deus Ex Machina to destroy Smith for good in exchange for peaceful existence between humans and machines. Deus connects Neo to the Matrix, and after an epic fight between Neo and Smith, the human-hating agent copies himself into Neo, which Deus uses to clean the Matrix and permanently delete Smith from the system.
3 Lord Voldemort
Tom Marvolo Riddle or Lord Voldemort was born in 1926 in a muggle orphanage. The darkest wizard of all time was desperate to conquer death and went to incredible length to do so. If it was up to him, Slytherin's Heir would've outlived Flamel, maybe even live forever.
He Who Must Not Be Named ripped his soul into seven pieces and potentially could live for 1,000 years. In the end, he was left with a fragile body, 1/7 of his soul, and a wand that wasn't loyal to him. He was killed in the battle of Hogwarts by Harry Potter.
2 Crowley
Fergus Roderick MacLeod, later Deamon Crowley, was born in 1661 and officially died in 1723, but does that really count? Yes, his human form ceased to exist, and he went to hell, but after he became a demon, he was much more alive than most living human beings. He's one of those characters that you can't hate for long.
They have this incredible power of making you love them, and Crowley did it. After all the evil things he's done, he ended up sacrificing himself in order to save the world from Lucifer. He couldn't trust that mission to anyone else because, as Crowley explained, "What's that old expression? If you want something done right... Blah, blah, blah."
1 Loki
Loki, The God of Mischief, "died" on many occasions, and all of those deaths were a masterpiece of an illusion. Loki would "die" in one movie and later pop up in another or the mid-credits scene of the film he died in.
His finest hour was saving Asgard's people and helping out his half-brother Thor in his fight against Hela, Goddess of Death. Loki would eventually be killed by Thanos, who made sure his death was real and final.
