Tesla's upcoming 2022 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles will reportedly have a so-called 'Superhorn' that combines a horn, alarm, and loudspeaker. The electric car-maker is known for incorporating innovative new ideas in its vehicles, although they have sometimes been a little hit-and-miss. While those like Full Self-Driving (FSD) mode enhance the driving experience, others, like the virtual fart tool, are not necessarily to everyone's taste.
Although Tesla has largely avoided routine model upgrades unlike other car-makers, it has, from time to time, added new hardware to its existing models. An example of that is the addition of its full self-driving computer (HW3) to cars in April 2019. The company also recently added an AMD Ryzen gaming chip in the Shanghai-made Model Y, increasing the responsiveness of the car’s interface. It has also refreshed the Model S and Model X with updated styling, yoke steering wheel, and tri-motor Plaid options.
Tesla is now reportedly planning to introduce a slew of new hardware to its 2022 Model 3 and Model Y. According to leaked documents on the German-language TFF forum, and spotted by Electrek, Tesla will add something called a 'Superhorn' to the two aforementioned vehicles. Per the document, the new hardware will combine a horn, alarm, and loudspeaker, but there's no further information on how that might function. The documents further suggest that many of the changes that were rolled out to the Model 3 and Model Y in the Chinese market will also make their way to Germany. These include a low-voltage (15.5V) lithium-ion battery, the Ryzen chip, and laminated glass for the rear doors.

The document suggests that the Superhorn might incorporate Tesla's Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS), which includes an external speaker that warns pedestrians about oncoming cars. It is a critical feature in an electric car as they are relatively quieter than internal combustion motors and can take pedestrians and other road users by surprise. As for the Superhorn, it's not clear what exactly that will entail, but it appears to be 3-in-1 hardware that's likely to play the AVAS warnings, the honks, and the Sentry Mode alarm.
The details were included in documents submitted by Tesla to European regulatory authorities for approval of the new hardware in the cars. While this suggests that the features are very likely to come to the European models that will soon be built at Gigafactory Berlin, it remains uncertain as to whether Tesla will also roll them out to the North American models as well.
