Matrix Resurrections Video Explores Neo & Trinity’s Romance

A new video for The Matrix Resurrections explores Neo and Trinity's long-lasting romance. Keanu Reeves' Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss' Trinity first met in 1999's The Matrix where they became allies and eventually lovers. Neo was "the one," as the prophecy foretold, who was destined to bring an end to The Matrix, although his journey to accomplishing that mission was fraught with death and sacrifice throughout the sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.

The finale of the original trilogy seemingly left both Neo and Trinity dead, as The Matrix was rebooted after Agent Smith's eventual defeat and neither character had yet resurfaced. However, in the final scene, The Oracle says that she suspects Neo and Trinity will be seen again, although she doesn't specify exactly how that would be. As per The Matrix Online, the RPG online game that followed the release of The Matrix Revolutions, neither Neo or Trinity's bodies were ever recovered from Machine City, the home base on Earth for the machines, leaving their destiny very much in question.

In a new featurette released by WB for The Matrix Resurrections, the love and romance of Neo and Trinity is brought to the forefront, which appears to be the focus of the new sequel to the franchise. The behind-the-scenes video features new footage and interviews with the cast and crew of the film, including Lana Wachowski, who cites the distance between the last sequel and the new one as being a major factor in how the chemistry is reflected for Neo and Trinity. For the new stars to the franchise, including Jonathan Groff, seeing the duo on set was "surprisingly emotional" as the characters have become so iconic since they first appeared in 1999. Take a look at the featurette below:

Reeves has remained steadily busy since the release of the first trilogy for The Matrix, having embodied new franchise characters (John Wick), while returning to the well of old ones (Bill & Ted). The actor just wrapped the fourth film in the John Wick series and is already preparing to shoot the fifth entry. Moss has worked steadily on a number of projects since The Matrix as well, including Netflix's Marvel shows, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist, and most recently played Rebecca Pruitt in the series Tell Me A Story for CBS.

Neo and Trinity (as well as Morpheus for that matter) have become synonymous with The Matrix franchise, serving as the backbone of the series from the start. The love story aspect has been prevalent since the first film, with the Oracle telling Trinity that she would fall in love with "The One" who ends up being Neo. Their love story blossomed throughout the trilogy and despite all the technical wizardry, awe-inspiring stunts, and wire-work kung-fu, the love story between the two served as the reason for fighting the machines in the first place. It's unknown how the story in The Matrix Resurrections will play out, but the focus on both of these characters seems apt for a franchise that was built of that relationship.
