One Marvel’s Spider-Man player has just figured out how to pull down fire escapes using Spidey’s signature webbing. Insomniac’s open-world superhero sandbox has earned high praise and record-breaking sales figures for its rewarding narrative that speaks to the core elements of Marvel’s most popular hero, updated versions of beloved characters like Miles Morales and Aunt May, and high attention to detail in the way Spider-Man travels the streets and skylines of New York City. Spidey can run, jump, somersault, and swing across Marvel’s Spider-Man’s large game world, and he can even use the environment to take down his enemies by utilizing his webs to fling a structure or garbage can at their heads.
Even years after Marvel’s Spider-Man first swung onto the PlayStation 4 in 2018, fans are still uncovering new hidden details and Easter Eggs. These have included wholesome text interactions between Peter Parker and his beloved Aunt May and subtle clues that foreshadow Dr. Otto Octavius’s transformation into the villainous Doc Ock hidden away in Marvel’s Spider-Man’s excellent Photo Mode. This extends to Peter’s interactions with his environment as his superhero alter-ego, with players continuing to uncover hidden animations of Spider-Man propelling himself along the many fire escapes that adorn New York's apartments.
As it turns out, Spidey can also tear down those fire escapes, as Reddit user putt123 discovered a few days ago. In a recent post to r/SpidermanPS4 (via Game Rant), Spider-Man uses his webbing to pull down a fire escape in the middle of New York City, with putt123 noting that they only just found out they can do this after playing Marvel’s Spider-Man for about a year. Many commenters speculated that this ability might have been patched in after the game’s launch, but Daredevil731 pointed out that it was always present in Marvel’s Spider-Man - though it isn’t clear if Spidey can pull down every fire escape in New York City or just certain structures like the one in putt123’s video.

The critical and commercial success of Marvel’s Spider-Man has helped usher in a new era of high-quality Marvel-based video games over the past few years, with Insomniac leading the charge with both 2020's spin-off Spider-Man: Miles Morales and the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Insomniac is also working on Marvel’s Wolverine, a spin-off featuring the X-Men’s frontline mutant berserker that is said to take place in the same continuity as Marvel’s Spider-Man and its follow-ups. In the meantime, Spidey has been making plenty of other video game appearances recently, as he just arrived in Marvel’s Avengers as a PlayStation-exclusive DLC character and has even swung into Fortnite as part of the newly-launched Chapter 3 Battle Pass.
While tearing down a heavy metal structure in the middle of a busy city street is rather reckless for a world-renowned superhero like Spider-Man, it's interesting that fans are still discovering new hidden tricks and details while playing Marvel’s Spider-Man - even a good three years after it first launched. Spidey is skilled at using his environment to his advantage, and now it seems that he even has New York City fire escapes as part of his arsenal in the never-ending battle against crime and super-villainy.
