Warning: SPOILERS for Hawkeye episode 2.
Disney's Hawkeye makes an odd mistake about Clint Barton's history, and it may explain an error in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Captain America musical. Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) just wants to spend the holidays with his kids in Hawkeye, but things don't go as planned. After Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) wears Hawkeye's old Ronin outfit while fighting off criminals, she gets in trouble with Barton's old foes, the Tracksuit Mafia. So now, Hawkeye needs to take down the bad guys with Bishop, face his dark past as the murderous Ronin, and still make it home in time to spend Christmas with his family.
Before Bishop messes up Hawkeye's holiday plans, he takes his kids to see Rogers: The Musical, but the play has one egregious error. During the show, actors sing and dance about the Avengers' battle against Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in New York. Actors representing all the original Avengers appear on stage, including stand-ins for Chris Evans' Captain America, Chris Hemsworth's Thor, and Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow. However, the play also includes Ant-Man in the sequence, despite Paul Rudd's character only debuting in the MCU years after the battle in The Avengers. Barton even points out the Ant-Man error to his kids, saying the character wasn't in the fight.
During Hawkeye, Clint Barton makes a mistake about his own history. After a LARP-enthusiast steals Hawkeye's old Ronin outfit, Barton makes a deal to get it back. All he has to do is let the live-action role-player kill him during fake combat. "And I fought Thanos," Hawkeye says with a sigh as he agrees to the terms. However, Hawkeye doesn't directly fight Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. Instead, he primarily plays keep-away with the Infinity Stones in the final battle. And since Hawkeye makes that error, it could explain why Ant-Man appears in the Captain America musical. If even Hawkeye's memory is foggy about the MCU events, no one can expect the general public to get the details right.
Hawkeye's error seems to explain the Captain America musical faux pas. Though Ant-Man wasn't in the Battle of New York, it makes sense the public could wrongly think he participated in it years later. After all, Hawkeye lived the events of the MCU. He was a part of everything from the Battle of New York in Avengers to the final stand against Josh Brolin's Thanos in Endgame. So if Hawkeye is looking back on events and thinking he fought Thanos, it makes sense that the public would also get details wrong about the Avengers' adventures.
Both MCU errors are genuinely all about details. For instance, though Hawkeye didn't directly fight Thanos in Endgame, he still participated in the battle against the Mad Titan. Similarly, Ant-Man appeared at the Battle of New York in another timeline during Endgame, so somewhere along the lines, that information could've leaked into the public's mind. If that's the case, it's not a stretch for the creators of Rogers: The Musical to suddenly add Ant-Man to the Captain America-themed show in Hawkeye. Because when it comes to getting the details of the MCU correct, not even Hawkeye can do that all day.
