Ghostbusters: 10 Best Winston Zeddemore Quotes, Ranked

Warning: This list contains spoilers for Ghostbusters: Afterlife

All four of the Ghostbusters shine brightly as icons of cinema. However, of the four, Winston Zeddemore as portrayed by Ernie Hudson was given the least amount of screentime by comparison. That said, Winston still managed to steal the show with his charm and love for the job.

From the original Ghostbusters from 1984 to the 2021 resurgence of the franchise Ghostbusters: Afterlife; Winston Zeddemore has also pleased audiences with many memorable quotes that fans young and old recite to this day.

10 An Iconic Return Line

"Yeah, We're All Gods." - Ghostbusters: Afterlife

The climax of Ghostbusters: Afterlife saw the return of Gozer the Gozerian and the original Ghostbusters. Gozer does indeed remember their encounter with the boys in beige, so Gozer coyly asks, "Are you...a god?" The Ghostbusters all respond in humorous ways.

Winston replies with, "Yeah, we're all gods," calling back to one of the most famous lines from the original Ghostbusters. It's also one of many references to previous films in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, showing Jason Reitman's care for the franchise.

9 He's Certainly Not Wrong

"Hey, New York. What A Town." - Ghostbusters II

Honestly, Ghostbusters II does some things better than the original, such as more for Winston to do. Despite standing right before a river of supernatural slime, Winston doesn't seem too bothered by it. Egon questions how much negative energy would be needed to create the river of slime and all Winston can respond with is, "Hey, New York. What a town."

In a way, this continues to show why Winston is perfect for being a Ghostbuster. Most would be wanting out of the subway as quickly as possible but Winston is eager to find out more, similar to how Ray often responds to the paranormal.

8 Aways Ready With A Quip

"Sorry. I Missed It..." - Ghostbusters II

As Ray, Egon, and Winston investigate the abandoned subways in search of the river of slime, ghosts begin attacking them. One of them happens to be an actual ghost train that Ray and Egon quickly get out of the way of while Winston just stands there, screaming as the train passed right through him.

It's already hilarious with the way Winston screams but it becomes even funnier when all Egon cares about is which train it was. He asks Winston if he caught the number on the locomotive and a still shocked Winston says, "Sorry. I missed it..."

7 In It For The Money

"If There's A Steady Paycheck In It, I'll Believe In Anything You Say." - Ghostbusters

It would seem that Winston is the only person to actually apply for the job of a Ghostbuster. Granted, he might not have believed in what they were doing at first as suggested when Janine gives him a massive list of supernatural threats.

A little overwhelmed by it, Winston replies in the most charismatic way possible, "If there's a steady paycheck in it, I'll believe in anything you say." Beginning Winston's long career as a Ghostbuster who takes things with stride.

6 A True Ghostbuster

"I May Be A Business Man But I Will Always Be A Ghostbuster." - Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Ghostbusters: Afterlife takes a page from Marvel by having a post-credit scene that shows that Winston is readying to open up the firehouse and revamp the Ghostbusters for future sequels. During this, the scene keeps cutting back over to Winston speaking with Janine, talking about how he's covering Ray's rent and reminiscing the day he arrived at the firehouse.

He's happy about his success since then, "I may be a businessman but I will always be a Ghostbuster." It's a heartfelt speech that makes it clear that Winston will never stop being a supernatural elimination specialist.

5 That's What Experience Will Do To You

"I Have Seen Sh*t That'll Turn You White." - Ghostbusters

Sometimes Ray and Egon have trouble relaying information, using a lot of technical jargon that ends up going over people's heads. That is definitely what happens when the Ghostbusters try to tell the Mayor about the incoming threat of Gozer.

Winston comes in to try and explain things in layman terms, talking about how he's only been with the company for a few weeks but these things are real, leading to the hilarious line, "I have seen sh*t that'll turn you white!"

4 That's What Makes Them So Special

"We Have The Tools, We Have The Talent!" - Ghostbusters

The Ghostbusters think they stopped Gozer atop Dana Barrett's building and this shows how cocky they can be sometimes. Winston immediately says, "We have the tools, we have the talent!" Of course, this ends up not being the case since Gozer makes a return but this line made an impact.

Despite this sometimes overly arrogant nature and how much trouble they can get into, Winston and his buddies come out on top.

3 That's Just What He Did

"Ray, When Someone Asks You if You’re a God, You Say, "Yes!" - Ghostbusters

Gozer proves how powerful they can be when the Ghostbusters, Ray in particular, attempt to convince them to return to their dimension. Gozer asks the famous line, "Are you a god?" When Ray says "no", Gozer blasts the four Ghostbusters back, nearly sending them over the edge.

After recovering, Winston scolds Ray by saying, "Ray, when someone asks you if you're a god, you say, "Yes!" Despite Winston's role being heavily reduced from the original script, it's moments like these that help the character shine.

2 A Legendary Quote

"That's A Big Twinkie." - Ghostbusters

Following one of Egon's most famous quotes, talking about how if a twinkie represented the normal amount of psychokinetic energy in the New York area, the current sample would be massive, Winston says, "That's a big twinkie."

This easily became one of the most famous quotes from the original Ghostbusters, it's a quick one-liner that can make anyone laugh. From there it made its way onto shirts, cups, and anything that can be thought of.  Even Ernie Hudson says that more fans ask him to say that line more than anything.

1 A New Yorker Through And Through

"I Love This Town!" - Ghostbusters

Having dealt with actual ghosts, demonic dogs, a Sumerian god, and a literal marshmallow kaiju beast, it would not be considered out of line to be overwhelmed by being a Ghostbuster. However, when the Ghostbusters save the day, free Dana and Louis from their Terror Dog husks, and head downstairs, Winston is happy.

In fact, Winston is so happy that he just cheers up into the sky, "I love this town!" before laughing with joy. Once again, this helps push the idea that Winston Zeddemore genuinely loves this job and was born to be a Ghostbuster.
