FFXIV: Endwalker - Pros & Cons Of Using Session Timers, Not Queues

The queue process for Final Fantasy XIV has been a frustrating experience for many fans, but a session timer might help players get into the game and avoid the error codes and unrestrained queue time. The playerbase has been steadily rising since the summer and excitement for Endwalker has further increased that number. This has created a long wait period for those looking to play the game. Unfortunately, Worlds are getting overloaded with characters trying to log into the game and FFXIV fans are receiving Error Code 2002. Players on popular servers especially are being met with queue times of hours before they can even join. Until the spike of adventurers subsides, limiting the amount of active time for characters could prove beneficial.

As of right now, there are too many players for the servers to handle, requiring that a queue be put in place to facilitate the process. Endwalker has been long-awaited and the influx of new, as well as returning, fans is creating a negative experience for a portion of the community. The development team has attempted to fix this issue by strengthening existing servers, but many more are needed to keep up with the increasing player population. FFXIV login issues were expected upon the release of the newest expansion. Alternative ideas for the rising playerbase might be needed and a session timer that limits how long adventurers can play could be the answer.

One of the positive aspects of FFXIV being an MMO is that fans can login from all over the world and experience any aspect of the game they want. However, not all adventurers can spend the same amount of time in Eorzea. By implementing a session timer, queue size will be smaller, giving quicker access to players with limited time. To experience the new story, fans need to buy a subscription, Endwalker, log in to FFXIV, and spend many hours completing previous expansions. Those with extra time gain an advantage by being able to wait in the queue and enjoy the expansion at a steady pace. Unfortunately, other adventurers may only have a couple of hours or less to play and might not even get into the game. A session timer would give everyone equal playing time. The negative effects of this change on FFXIV, however, might outweigh the benefits.

Everything in an MMO takes extensive time to complete and each player finishes a task at a different rate. If there was a limit to active sessions for characters, players would have to prioritize which activity they can do before they have to leave each day. Fans sitting down on a day off, wishing to sink hours into FFXIV, will inevitably be upset when their normal time is cut short. Endwalker also reset mid-level EXP, which means progress will be harder to make up if sessions are limited. Fans pay to play the game and being told they can't will probably not go over well. A long queue is frustrating, but once adventurers are inside Eorzea, they can spend their time however they wish.

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker has attracted more players than spots available on the servers. While adventurers are still experiencing the new expansion, the wait time will probably continue to increase. The development team has already put in an in-game thirty-minute AFK timer to remove all non-active players. A session timer may also help reduce the queue time for logins. Until more servers get added, fans will, unfortunately, need to continue to wait their turn.
