Doctor Strange Casts Spell Like Scarlet Witch in No Way Home Trailer

Doctor Strange casts a spell like Scarlet Witch in a new Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer. Throughout Tom Holland's solo Marvel Cinematic Universe films, his Spider-Man has been accompanied by another major hero. Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man played this part in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but then Nick Fury was used in the sequel. Spider-Man: No Way Home's returning MCU vet is none other than Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange, who makes his fifth movie appearance.

From the time that it was announced Doctor Strange would be in Spider-Man: No Way Home, viewers began speculating about his role and any connections it would have to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Its been revealed that Peter seeks out Stephen Strange after having the idea of using magic to undo Mysterio revealing his Spider-Man identity. However, the spell doesn't go as planned, leading to villains from previous Spider-Man franchises jumping to the MCU through the multiverse. Strange is also the one to reveal to Peter that all of them are destined to die fighting Spider-Man in their universes. Spider-Man: No Way Home's marketing indicates that this will involve Strange playing a major role in the film's third act.

In the latest Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer released by Sony, a new piece of Doctor Strange's third act heroics are shown, and it includes a connection to Scarlet Witch. Strange is shown casting a spell using runes, just like the ones Wanda Maximoff and Agatha Harkness used in WandaVision. The Disney+ show explained that runes were used by a magic user to ensure they were the only ones who could use magic inside where they've been cast. Doctor Strange's Scarlet Witch-like spell can be seen around 10 or 11 seconds into the video below:

Spider-Man: No Way Home's runes are a new use of magic for Doctor Strange in the MCU. The powerful sorcerer has been shown using all types of magical abilities throughout Spider-Man: No Way Home's marketing though. Audiences have seen him knock Peter's astral form out of his body and battle Spider-Man in the Mirror Dimension. Doctor Strange's magic will also clearly be used in creating the film's multiverse story, and it stands to reason that he'll be included in the finale to try and fix things - even if that means going through with making everyone forget Peter Parker is Spider-Man.

With Doctor Strange said to be even more powerful in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it makes sense for Spider-Man: No Way Home to tease him leveling up. His use of runes is intriguing, though. It could suggest that another magic-powered individual is involved in the finale or that runes have additional benefits than WandaVision showed. This also makes it quite likely that Scarlet Witch won't be the only magical being in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to use runes, as Doctor Strange can continue his use of them after Spider-Man: No Way Home.
