The creator of the Super Smash Bros. series has only now acquired an Xbox Series X, despite several Microsoft-owned characters appearing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Masahiro Sakurai created the third best-selling Nintendo Switch game, as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is just behind Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, yet he isn't a direct employee of Nintendo.
Sakurai is the founder of Sora Ltd., which is a company that works with other developers to produce games. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a co-production between Sora Ltd. and Bandai Namco, as were the previous entries on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. As such, Sakurai often discusses games released on other platforms, especially in his column for Famitsu magazine, as he isn't beholden to Nintendo as a company or the Nintendo Switch as a console.
The console shortages are set to continue into next year, and even the creator of the Super Smash Bros. series has had to fight tooth and nail to acquire one. Sakurai revealed on Twitter that he has finally been able to acquire an Xbox Series X, even though the console launched a year ago. He posted a picture of the boxed system next to his cat, showing its massive bulk. Sakurai mentioned the pandemic in the post and the difficulties of buying consoles in the current climate, but this grim reference didn't stop the official Xbox Twitter account from replying with the hope that Sakurai enjoys his new console.
It seems Sakurai had a lot more trouble acquiring an Xbox Series X than he did a PS5. Sakurai purchased a PS5 last November, within the launch month of the device. He was able to pre-order and acquire the system largely through luck. Sakurai released footage from within his home during the pandemic, as he had to record some of the Smash Directs there, and he showed off his amazing gaming setup, which will now include the Xbox Series X in its line-up of systems.
It's strange that Sakurai wasn't given a free Xbox Series X by Microsoft, considering Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has two Microsoft-owned characters in its DLC roster, in the form of Banjo-Kazooie and the Minecraft characters. Then again, Sakurai doesn't appear to be the kind of person who would ask for a brand new console from its manufacturer, since he purchased the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The Xbox line of systems has struggled to find a foothold in Japan in the past, thanks to the domination of the Nintendo and PlayStation brands, but an endorsement from the creator of the Super Smash Bros. series might prompt more people in the region to check the new system out for themselves.
