Stranger Things: One Quote From Each Main Character That Goes Against Their Personality

The characters of Stranger Things each have their own unique personalities. After fighting monsters from the Upside Down on three separate occasions, every character has developed a distinct role within the show. Whether it's fighting or research, the residents of Hawkins have learned how to best take care of the Upside Down.

With season 4 set to premiere next year, it may be worth fans re-visiting the residents of Hawkins. While Stranger Things is full of great quotes from the characters that reflect their personalities, each character also has a quote that doesn't quite fit with what fans have come to know and love about them.

Joyce Byers is characterized as a very protective mother. She loves her children fiercely and always fights for them. After the events with the Upside Down, Joyce also becomes extremely close with Chief Hopper. He is one of the few adults who knows the truth, and so one of the few people she can turn to for comfort.

In season three, however, Joyce spends a lot of time yelling at Hopper. The two usually make a perfect team, looking out for the children. This outburst from Joyce is not only out of line with her relationship with Hopper but also the only time Joyce says something actually hurtful to anyone.

Hopper is initially a very gruff character. However, once he takes in Eleven, he softens. He cares very deeply for El and works hard to make sure she will always be safe. Although it doesn't seem like it at first, being a dad comes naturally to Hopper.

Even with Hopper's occasionally broody attitude, he still makes his loved ones his first priority. One of Hopper's best traits is his innate protectiveness. So when Hop gets into an argument with El, it is shocking that he would threaten her so callously. Hopper is meant to be El's guardian, and while he usually fills this role well, this quote completely goes against his usual attitude.

Nancy is a pretty consistent character. In every season she has a knack for solving important mysteries. Nancy's best trait is her commitment to discovering the truth. When she isn't fighting the Upside Down she is the typical 80s suburban girl. She's kind and smart, works hard at school, and prides herself on having a good boyfriend.

The one time Nancy breaks her own mold is at Tina's Halloween party. Still grieving Barb's death, she drinks too much alcohol and a fight with Steve ensues. Steve is by no means the perfect boyfriend, but Nancy lays into him like she never has before and in a way that's inconsistent with her usual temperate personality.

Jonathan is the quietest member of the Upside Down party. Before Nancy, he never had many close friends besides his brother. He keeps to himself and enjoys his photography. However, when his family is threatened Jonathan becomes a fierce protector.

This quote from Jonathan in season three is unusual because he becomes unusually hostile with Nancy. Jonathan does not usually raise his voice at his loved ones. He isn't an aggressive person by any means, but this quote is the opposite of that. The stress of the situation gets to him and he says things he normally never would.

Billy becomes the secondary villain when he is introduced in season two. He likes attention and goes about getting it in various in-your-face ways. Not only does he enjoy pushing Steve around on the basketball court, but he constantly makes threats to his sister, Max, and her friends.

When Billy shows concern for Max in season three it is immediately alarming. In fact, Billy's kind behavior is a scary moment for fans. After Max threatened him with the nail bat in season two, Billy left the kids alone, but that doesn't mean he cared about them. The concern he shows for Max and El is an immediate red flag that he has been possessed.

Steve starts Stranger Things as a secondary character, characterized as an average teen boy. However, in the second season, he proves himself as a protector of the kids and comes to take that role pretty seriously. In fact, Steve has one of the best character arcs in the show. While he wasn't always the smartest, he was never a mean character.

When Steve thinks Nancy is cheating on him with Jonathan, he lets his friends take it too far. Steve allows them to publicly humiliate her and then doesn't listen when Nancy tries to tell him the truth. For the most part, Steve is a good boyfriend but in this instance he lets this situation go too far and turns himself into a villain.

Lucas tends to be the more assertive party member. He isn't afraid to call his friends out when he believes they are in the wrong or acting stupidly. However, that doesn't mean he doesn't care for his friends. He sticks by his party and does everything with them.

In season one Lucas tends to get onto Mike and Dustin more often. He is upset that Will is missing, and he often lets his emotions out on his friends. However, Mike and Lucas have been best friends for a long time, so it is unusual that Lucas would be so mean to Mike. Lucas is usually protective of his friends, so this moment definitely goes against his personality.

Max is also introduced in season two alongside her step-brother Billy. She is an abrasive character, often using sarcasm to cover her true feelings. She claims to not want to be a part of the party, but she also tries hard to impress them. She's just a kid trying to fit in in a new place.

The only moment Max appears afraid is when Billy is bullying her. Max can keep her mask on in front of everyone except her step-brother. When he threatens to hit Mike, Lucas, and Dustin while they're on their bikes, Max is scared because she doesn't trust Billy to be joking. The calm and collected Max disappears when Billy tries to get a rise out of her.

Dustin is often the smartest party member. Each season he proves his intellect by helping the others discover how to solve their problems. He is also often the comic relief on the show with a strong sense of humor and a quick wit.

This quote from season three is one of the very few times Dustin is completely serious. He doesn't usually offer advice, let alone without making some kind of joke. However, his friendship with Steve grows incredibly quickly between seasons two and three, so he is more willing to be serious. Dustin and Steve's friendship is heartwarming, but this moment is new for Dustin.

Mike is the de facto leader of the party. When Will goes missing Mike is the one who never gives up on finding him. When Will suffers from visions of the Upside Down, Mike is always there is comfort him. Mike takes his role in the party very seriously.

It appears that Mike and Will are closest to each other, especially in season two when they are constantly together. This fight from season three then feels very out of character for Mike. He does have a tendency to say things he doesn't mean, but he never says them to Will. While this scene is one of Will's most iconic moments, it is one of Mike's worst.

Will is the most dedicated to the party. After the trauma he suffered in the Upside Down, Will could rely on his friends because they understood what he had gone through. After being possessed by the Mindflayer, Will just wants to be a normal kid with his friends.

This quote from season three is both heartbreaking and unusual for Will. He appears to completely give up on the party as he rips down every picture he has of them in Castle Byers. He feels betrayed and left behind and works it out the only way he knows how. Will has never shown anything but love for his friends which makes this scene especially painful.

None of the events of Stranger Things would be possible without El. She has both opened and closed the gate and fought the Mindflayer. She cares deeply for the rest of the characters as they are the only people to have ever cared about her.

The fierce love El feels for her friends extends to her surrogate father, Hopper. This quote is then shocking when compared to their relationship. They rely on one another to become better people, but at this moment they rub each other the wrong way. El laters gives up being with her sister to save Hopper and her friends, which just makes this quote even more startling.
