Simu Liu Talks to a Dragon in Hilarious Shang-Chi Old Spice Commercial

Simu Liu talks to a dragon in a hilarious Shang Chi-Old Spice commercial. After starting out in Hollywood as an extra and a stuntman, one of Liu's first major roles was in the popular Canadian sitcom, Kim's Convenience, as Jung Kim, the estranged son of two Korean convenience store owners. That led to his big breakout this year in Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings in which he debuted as the character colloquially known as Marvel's Master of Kung Fu.

Released in theaters this past September, Marvel's Shang-Chi movie broke down a multitude of barriers for the MCU as their first movie with a predominately Asian and Asian-American cast. Other than Liu, Shang-Chi stars Awkwafina, Meng'er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley, and Tony Leung. The film was such a hit at the box office that Marvel Studios quickly entered development on a sequel, although a few characters from Shang-Chi could reappear in the MCU before then.

Simu Liu's latest appearance as Shang-Chi comes in a hilarious Old Spice commercial. The ad finds Liu fresh out of the shower where he is surprised by a talking dragon-shaped deodorant holder. After a pep talk, the dragon urges him to "put on some Old Spice Dragonblast" so they can go "save the world," cueing a montage of clips from Shang-Chi, including some of him riding the dragon known as the Great Protector, hence the caption, "I'm on a dragon," a reference to Isaiah Mustafa's iconic "I'm on a horse" Old Spice commercial. Watch the new ad below:

Liu has some pretty big shoes to fill in this Old Spice commercial considering how memorable Mustafa and Terry Crews were as the brand's spokesmen, though the Shang-Chi actor does an admirable job in his debut. This specific commercial was made in collaboration with Marvel to promote the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings' on Disney+. As of November 12, subscribers can watch the MCU movie on the streaming service in IMAX's expanded aspect ratio, allowing viewers to see more of the original picture.

Though Liu will likely be known as Shang-Chi for the rest of his career, he has begun to capitalize on his newfound fame and branch out with roles in the romantic drama One True Loves and the adventure movie Arthur the King. Though neither of them is as anticipated as Liu reprising his role as Shang-Chi in the film's sequel, in the meantime, keep an eye out for Doctor Strange 2 as his next potential appearance in the MCU.
