RDJ Sends Profane Congrats To MCU Co-Star Scarlett Johansson

Robert Downey Jr. congratulates his MCU co-star, Scarlett Johansson, for her latest award with a profanity-filled message. The pair first worked together in Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2 from 2010 as Tony Stark/Iron Man and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow. Since then, they've co-starred in multiple Marvel Studios movies; both ending their respective arcs in 2019 with Avengers: Endgame. While Tony's narrative wrapped up in the Joe and Anthony Russo-directed flick, Johansson returned for the prequel film, Black Widow, which served as her proper send-off.

Admittedly, Johansson's exit from the MCU was more complicated than Downey's. For starters, her death in Avengers: Endgame was widely criticized. In addition to that, the Black Widow standalone film was supposed to kick off Phase 4, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was delayed several times. The film's hybrid release both in theaters and on Disney+ also resulted in Johansson filing a lawsuit against Disney for loss of potential earnings.  Eventually, both parties found a middle ground, with the case getting dismissed. Amid all of this, there's no denying that being part of the MCU was an important time for Johansson.

As members of the original Avengers line-up with Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Johansson and Downey have become close friends throughout their time in the MCU. So, when the Iron Man actor was asked to honor his Marvel co-star as she became the 35th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award, he couldn't refuse. However, instead of the typical heartwarming message, Downey opted for an edgier speech. Of course, everything was done in good fun. As mentioned, it's all part of Downey's bit and it successfully evoked laughter from the audience, including Johansson. Aside from the actor, other MCU stars also paid tribute to the actress, albeit in a more traditional way. Sam Rockwell, Chris Evans, and Samuel L. Jackson all sent in their messages. Meanwhile, Jeremy Renner, Favreau, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige were in attendance to personally pay tribute to the actress. In fact, during his speech, Feige revealed that they are already reteaming again with Johansson for a “top secret Marvel Studios project.” While he didn't provide any more details about this new collaboration, he did say that it has nothing to do with Black Widow or Natasha Romanoff's character.

It's great to see some of the founding MCU actors come together to honor Johansson. For Downey, it's even interesting to see the Mark I displayed in the background of his video. As exciting as the franchise's future seems to be, there will always have a special place for the original Avengers. While the universe will have to go on without some of them, there's always a possibility that both Downey and Johansson reprise their roles as Iron Man and Black Widow down the road due to the burgeoning MCU multiverse.
