Warning! Spoilers ahead for Justice League: Last Ride #7
In DC's final issue of Justice League: Last Ride, the newly resurrected Martian Manhunter returns to the DC Universe with an all-new role for the future. Taking place in an alternate universe where the League broke up after the Manhunter's death, it's only fitting that they would reunite now that he's back in the land of the living. However, J'onn J'onzz has new responsibilities beyond the League now that he wields one of the greatest power in the cosmos.
In previous issues of Justice League: Last Ride from writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Miguel Mendonça, Darkseid unleashed a simultaneous attack on Oa and Earth that resulted in Martian Manhunter sacrificing himself. As such, the loss of J'onn J'onzz broke the Justice League while creating animosity between Batman and Superman in particular. Furthermore, while the League believed that Darkseid had been defeated with the destruction of Oa's Central Power Battery, it was later revealed that he had been possessing Green Lantern Hal Jordan. Using Jordan as his puppet, he was able to reassemble the League for one last mission, which brought them to the remains of Apokolips so that Darkseid might be resurrected as a powerful Green Lantern before destroying the heroes once and for all.
However, the Martian Manhunter returns as well, binding his surviving consciousness to a body made from pure willpower, the green light used by the Green Lanterns. As a result, the Justice League is able to win the day and defeat Darkseid for good. Furthermore, the aftermath of the battle sees Martian Manhunter becoming the sole Guardian of the rebuilt Green Lantern Corps, seeing as how the original Guardians have all been slain by Darkseid himself during his invasion.
Despite J'onn's new role as Oa's new Guardian, it seems as though he still cares about the well-being of the Justice League, which has decided to get back together. Taking on the new name Justice League Universal, Earth's heroes will be expanding their efforts beyond protecting just their own world, and Martian Manhunter will likely be right alongside them to get their new initiative off the ground as they look to the stars.
In any case, Martian Manhunter's new role beyond the Justice League is rather fitting considering his new form, which would have forever tied him to the Green Lantern Corps regardless in this alternate DC Universe. Furthermore, there are very few other beings who'd be as qualified to become a Guardian seeing as how this resurrected Martian Manhunter is essentially a living being made of pure willpower.
