It appears How I Met Your Mother’s twist ending of killing off Tracy was subtly foreshadowed all along by Bob Saget’s casting as Future Ted. Throughout the series, Ted Moseby is telling his teenage children the story of how he met their mother, with young Ted being portrayed by Josh Radnor and Future Ted/The Narrator being voiced by Bob Saget - until the show's final scenes. Saget’s casting added a larger sense of nostalgia and comfort to Ted for viewers who knew him better from Full House, but his iconic sitcom role also hinted at How I Met Your Mother’s surprise finale.
After nearly a decade of watching Ted search for his future wife, How I Met Your Mother’s season 8 finale revealed the titular mother to be Tracy McConnell (Cristin Milioti). Season 9 changes the format of How I Met Your Mother’s storytelling, following two timelines: In the present, as characters prepare for Barney and Robin's wedding and flashforwards as Ted and Tracy’s life together is shown. After spending season 9 getting to know and love Tracy, How I Met Your Mother ended with a tragic reveal; she had passed away from a terminal illness six years before Ted was telling the story to their children.
How I Met Your Mother now ranks as one of the most controversial series finales of all time due to Tracy’s death twist and Ted ending up with Robin instead - but the surprising reveal was hinted at from the very beginning due to Bob Saget voicing old Ted. Saget’s most famous role is Danny Tanner from Full House, a single father who, with the help of his best friends, raises his three young daughters after the untimely passing of his wife. In retrospect, this is eerily similar to how Ted’s life progresses after the series finale. Ted was a family-oriented man who had to raise his young children with the help of his best friends after his wife passed away unexpectedly.
Future Ted leaves Easter eggs throughout How I Met Your Mother revealing how close he remained with Robin, Barney, Lily and Marshall while raising his children, and how they all had a hand in helping raise them. While Marshall, Barney and Lily don’t move in with Ted to help raise Penny and Luke, they may as well be the equivalent of Full House’s Joey, Jesse, and Becky. In a way, one can think of Radnor’s Ted Moseby being the Past Danny, with Full House being some kind of How I Met Your Mother sequel. While the series’ backgrounds on Ted and Danny differ far too much to make this a reality, it’s clear Bob Saget’s How I Met Your Mother casting went a lot further than just nodding to his most popular show.
Considering Bob Saget being cast as Future Ted hinted at his character’s ending, it also suggests the How I Met Your Mother spinoff’s casting for Future Sophie will foreshadow her character resolution. How I Met Your Father’s Sophie (Ted’s equivalent) is portrayed by Hillary Duff, with Sex and the City’s Kim Cattrall cast as Future Sophie/The Narrator. The casting of Cattrall is extremely appropriate, considering her How I Met Your Father character will be retelling the story of her sex life and relationships in New York, which calls back to her beloved Sex and the City character Samantha Jones. If young Sophie is anything like Samantha, Hillary Duff’s How I Met Your Father character will struggle when her relationships become too emotionally attached, which could mean Sophie isn’t even married to the father in the future.
