Henry Cavill Explains The Power Of Superman Killing Zod in Man of Steel

Henry Cavill explains why Superman killing Zod in Man of Steel is such a powerful moment for the character. Cavill hasn't donned the cape for a new Superman film in several years now, but Man of Steel remains a fan-favorite movie for superhero fans everywhere. The Zack-Snyder-directed film introduces Cavill's version of the character and features a standout villain with Zod, played by Michael Shannon.

Man of Steel follows Clark Kent as he discovers his alien heritage and fights back against the remaining members of his species that have come to invade Earth. During the film's standout final battle, Superman defeats Zod, much to the surprise of fans everywhere, by breaking his neck. While Cavill has not done a standalone Superman film since 2013's Man of Steel, he would go on to reprise his role for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and both the regular version of Justice League and Zack Snyder's cut.

In a new interview with THR, Cavill reflected on Man of Steel and what killing Zod in such a brutal fashion meant for his character. Cavill explains that the moment was important because it shaped who Superman was and how he would behave going forward.

"The killing of Zod gave a reason for the character to never kill again. There's an opportunity for growth after that, to explore the psyche of Superman as a deep, seemingly invulnerable god-like being but with real feeling on the inside."

The moment certainly was shocking, but Cavill's comments make clear that it wasn't done just for shock value. As far as character-defining moments go, killing the last of your species is a big one and it sounds like both Cavill and Snyder carried this decision with them in future films. In Batman V Superman, for example, Superman clearly has no intention of killing Bruce Wayne, despite Wayne's continued attempts to kill him. Interestingly, Superman's killing of Zod wasn't the only controversial decision made regarding beloved heroes in a Snyder-directed film, with Batman's rampant killing of criminals in Batman V Superman also coming under fire by some fans.

Zod's brutal death is one of the most memorable moments from Man of Steel and it's reassuring to know that it was done with the intention of shaping the character. It's easy to see Superman as this god-like, invincible character but Cavil is clearly interested in going beyond that. Instead of a one-off event, the killing of Zod turned Superman into the version of the character that fans know and love. Hopefully, Cavill is given another opportunity to don the cape for a new standalone Superman film in the future where he can more fully explore the psyche of the beloved character and give fans more of what they love while also challenging them to see Superman in exciting new ways.
