Elvis Presley Movie Trailer Reveals First Look At Baz Lurhmann Biopic

A new teaser trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Elvis biopic offers a sneak peek of Austin Butler as the King. Luhrmann has made a name for himself directing lush spectacles: he took on Shakespeare with his modern retelling of Romeo + Juliet, helmed the glitzy Parisian musical Moulin Rouge!, and tackled the roaring twenties with The Great Gatsby. The Australian director’s next venture will focus on an American musical icon, detailing Elvis Presley’s rise to fame as well as the singer’s complex relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, who discovered him in 1955.

Following a lengthy search for the leading actor, Austin Butler was cast as Elvis in Summer 2019. The relative newcomer known for his work in Arrow, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and his Broadway debut opposite Denzel Washington in The Iceman Cometh, beat out other high-profile talent. Harry Styles, Miles Teller, and Ansel Elgort - who will soon star in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story - were all shortlisted for the role. Tom Hanks will co-star as Parker, and he already debuted a new look meant to capture the enigmatic manager’s bald, bespectacled style.

Now, Luhrmann releases the much-anticipated teaser trailer for Elvis on Twitter, assuring audiences that the film will debut this summer. “Made a little something to let you good people know we are taking care of business on June 24, 2022,” reads Luhrmann’s caption. The director invokes the singer’s favorite catchphrase - “taking care of business” - which also appears abbreviated as TCB at the end of the trailer. The 21-second clip gives fans their first look at Butler's Elvis, hinting at the singer’s slicked-back hair and characteristic outfits, which include a black leather jacket and white jumpsuit. The teaser doesn’t offer much in the way of details, with the slo-mo pacing a mysterious intro to the anticipated biopic, but minor clues are sprinkled throughout. In addition to being his motto, TCB - which is adorned on the screen by a lightning bolt - was Elvis’ nickname for his band, starting in 1969. The footage is also set to an altered version of his '69 hit “Suspicious Minds,” indicating that the film will probably be set at the end of that decade. Aside from showing Elvis’ silhouette, the teaser is absent of any co-stars, including Hanks’ Parker, Maggie Gyllenhaal as Elvis’ mother, or Olivia DeJonge as his wife Priscilla.

The confirmed release date comes after a series of headachy postponements. Talks of development on the film began in 2014, and filming began last year before being halted due to Hanks testing positive for COVID-19 in March, with Elvis originally scheduled to open October 2021. The film marks the first proper Elvis biopic in years, though he has been portrayed on film and TV countless times. John Carpenter directed a made-for-TV movie about Elvis in 1979 starring Kurt Russell, and more recently, Jonathan Rhys Meyers played the hip-swaying performer in a 2005 miniseries. Luhrmann, however, feels ideally suited to helm a definitive biopic on Elvis, given his familiarity with musicals and a bold, lavish style befitting the King’s larger-than-life persona. Luhrmann will surely tease more footage—and hopefully musical performances—from Elvis in the coming months.
